Most popular ski resorts in Switzerland

When it comes to the most popular resorts, Verbier and Zermatt reign high. Snow lovers from around the globe head to these for their high-end accommodation, glamorous atmosphere, outstanding Swiss hospitality and of course the spectacular skiing. Verbier is the place to ski deep powder and rub shoulders with the rich and royal before partying seriously hard when the lifts close. A stay in Zermatt is accompanied by some of the best scenery in the Alps thanks to the mighty Matterhorn – the rail journey here is one of the most scenic in the world.

Like Zermatt, St Moritz, Klosters, Davos and Grindelwald are members of the “Best of the Alps” group which officially recognises the world-renowned classics of the Alpine world. These are some of Switzerland’s oldest, prettiest mountain villages and have attracted visitors from around the globe for centuries.

Set on a lake and known as the “birthplace of winter sports”, classy St Moritz is known for its awesome nightlife, tons of gourmet restaurants and boutique shopping. The twinned resorts of Klosters and Davos are easily reachable by rail and great for families... Low key Klosters is ridiculously pretty and frequented by royals and celebs and cosmopolitan Davos has Europe’s biggest natural ice rink, great shopping and lively après. Grindelwald’s chilled atmosphere and dramatic setting make it another popular place to ski (the views of the Eiger and Wetterhorn are frankly spectacular).

After Zermatt, Saas Fee probably has the best snow in the country thanks to its high altitudes and skiable glacier. Nicknamed the 'Pearl of the Alps’, voted best ski resort in Switzerland, and second best in the Alps, this is one of the most popular resorts for families and the narrow traffic free streets and chocolate box chalets make this proper alpine village a lovely base for skiing the Swiss Alps.

Swiss ski resorts FAQ:

You can ski right across the Swiss Alps. Verbier is one of the most desirable ski resorts in the world and is often visited by the Royal Family and celebs alike. Other ski areas in Switzerland include Graubünden, 4 Vallees and Jungfrau region.

Zermatt has to be number one on the list-of-resorts to visit in Switzerland. With stunning views of the Matterhorn, the charming town and the perfect snow-sure slopes up to 3899m - Zermatt is ideal for skiing at all times of the year.

338 was the total number of Swiss resorts on last count - that’s almost one for every day of the year! (This information was accurate when written)

Davos is a sizable town and the biggest stand-alone resort in terms of kilometres of pistes. The linked 4 Valleys ski area tops this distance, which includes the resorts Nendaz and Verbier (Verbier being the biggest town). See our list of the 10 biggest Swiss resorts to read about other big ski resorts/areas in Switzerland.

Home to the highest ski slope in Europe at 3899m, Zermatt has fantastic early season snowfall and the best slope conditions for skiing in December. Views of the world-renowned Matterhorn aren't bad either! Saas Fee and the 4 Vallees are also great options for early season skiing in December due to their high ski areas.

Crans Montana is a fantastic place to go away this January. The resort sits at 1500m with skiing up to 3000m – perfect for retaining that earlier season snow. With mainly south-facing slopes and averaging over 300 days of sunshine a year, you'll be able to enjoy lunch outside too. Grindlewald, Klosters and Arosa are also firm favourites among skiers looking to beat those January blues.

St Moritz is perfect for February skiing. With over 350km of downhill pistes and a variety of runs, it has something for all skiers and snowboarders. It's sunny all year round with picturesque views of the lakes and pine forests.

Davos is one of the most desirable ski resorts in the world. The town has that chocolate box feel to it and there's plenty of non-skiing activities - you won't get cabin fever here! There are over 320km of pistes to explore and a varied range terrain suitable for all abilities. Nendaz, Laax and Verbier also come top of the list for sunny skiing in March.

Are you looking for the best end of season snow in Switzerland? Saas Fee is the place to be! It's one of the highest resorts in Switzerland at 1800m and has skiing up to 3600m - the conditions don't get much better than Saas Fee. The resort sits in the valley between 4000m high mountain peaks. If you're feeling adventurous Zermatt is a 50-minute train away!

You can drive to these Swiss resorts from Calais in one day: Grindelwald, Verbier, Crans Montana, Nendaz and Wengen. Ski resorts with a short transfer from the nearest airport include Lauterbrunnen - 1 hour, Grindelwald - 1 hour 10 min, Crans Montana - 2 hour 10 min, Davos - 2 hour 15 min and Verbier - 2 hour 30 min

Switzerland is the ideal country to learn to ski. It doesn't get much better than Samnaun in the Silvretta ski area. With over 40% of slopes suited to beginners and plenty of lovely wide slopes, Sumnaun is the best place to perfect those turns.

  • St Moritz, Zermatt and Grindelwald have train stations that can be reached via the Eurostar via Paris and Zurich followed by regional trains.

Zermatt’s heaven for couples, with view of the mighty Matterhorn that’ll take your breath away plus seriously swoon-worthy snow conditions. The postcard-ready village (all choc-box lodges and cobbled streets) is full of restaurants serving top-quality cuisine, private spas for pampering and chic cocktail bars.

Verbier is the liveliest ski resort in Switzerland and quite possibly the world. If you love a post-ski party, this is the place to come with the famous Farinet bar and Farm Club among the many après-ski and nightlife venues. Check out our Switzerland après-ski top 10 page for more information.

The cheapest ski resorts in Switzerland include Davos, a href="/ski/switzerland/les-diablerets/">Les Diablerets, Interlaken, Nendaz and Crans Montana.

St Moritz wins top-prize for most luxurious resort in Switzerland with its grand hotels, designer shopping and gourmet dining. Verbier and Zermatt are very close contenders. Discover more luxury ski resorts in Switzerland.

Yes, it’s best practice these days. Children especially should wear a helmet and they’re often mandatory for ski school. Make sure it’s a ski/snow helmet, as cycling, skating or horse riding helmets are made differently and don’t give the same protection. Read more here about safety tips in the mountains.

Some of the more quaint and less well-known resorts in Switzerland are Wengen, Engelberg, Adelboden, Murren, and Klosters.

Zermatt sits in sight of the magnificent Matterhorn, Switzerland’s national landmark, and the most photographed mountain on the planet! The village is a treat for the eyes, with its car-free cobbled streets, boutique chocolate shops and elegant church steeples. Read more on our Prettiest resorts in Switzerland page.
