French Ski Food

If there is one thing the French can do better than anyone else, it’s rich, hearty, scrumptious food, usually oozing with lashings of butter and cheese. Incredible food can be found across the resort and ski area in France. Indulge in authentic French dishes, washed down with some top-notch wine – and all guilt-free, as you will ski it off in no time!

Popular ski dishes in France

  • Croque Monsieur – A fancy cheese and ham toasted sandwich often served in French mountain restaurants at lunch.
  • Tartiflette – a heart-warming Savoyard special consisting of potatoes, reblochon cheese and bacon lardons
  • Croziflette – very similar to the tartiflette, but with buckwheat pasta (Crozet) instead of potatoes
  • Raclette – semi-firm cow’s milk cheese, served on a warm grill to your table. Slice off the melted cheese as it drips from the iron grill. Usually served with new potatoes, dried meats, and gherkins.
  • French Onion Soup – a firm comfort-food lunchtime favourite. Caramelised onions cooked with a rich beef stock, topped off with melted, crispy Gruyere cheese and fresh garlic croutons.
  • Diots au Vin Blanc – from the region of La Savoie, meaty sausages seasoned with nutmeg, cooked in white wine.
  • Fondue Bourguignonne – tender cubes of beef cooked in a fondue pot of cooking oil and burner. Using a dipping fork, cook the beef to your liking. Served with a selection of sauces and French fries. This is a great sharing option for the whole table.
  • Tarte Tatin – an iconic French dessert with succulent caramelised apple, cinnamon, and crisp pastry
  • Crème brûlée – a rich, creamy custard dessert topped with hardened caramelised sugar.

  • Käsespätzle – meaning ‘cheese spätzle’, is the Austrian take on Macaroni & Cheese, with homemade Bavarian egg noodles and either Emmental or Gruyere.
  • Speckknödelsuppe (Tyrolean Dumpling Soup) – fluffy dumplings containing stale bread, bacon, fried onions and a clear (usually beef) broth. Garnished with chives and parsley.
  • Gulasch Suppe (Goulasch soup) – a hearty, filling soup with beef, onions, and potatoes as the main ingredients.
  • Apfelstrudel (Apple Strudel) – a national Austrian sweet dish comprised of apples, raisins, sugar and cinnamon encased in unleavened dough.
  • Kaiserschmarrn – a delicious lightly sweetened fluffy pancake. Often served with applesauce, fresh berries, and vanilla ice cream.
  • Germknödel – don’t let the unfortunate name put you off – this is a sweet yeast dumpling, accompanied by vanilla sauce or with poppy seeds and melted butter.
