Ah, New Years… that time of year when the peaceful and charming villages of the Jungfrau area come alive with merriment and festive celebrations. Not only do the resorts of Mürren, Grindelwald and Wengen put on fantastic firework displays (the Swiss are all about their fireworks, they spare no expense as you can imagine), but also there are street parties and special New Year Galas in many of the hotels. Plus during the day you can explore the fantastic pistes (and the off-piste) of one of Switzerland’s premier ski areas.
It’s a nationwide tradition to go out for a fondue meal with the family on New Year’s Eve, and we would highly recommend visiting one of the great local restaurants and joining in. Afterwards you can continue the celebrations at one of the bars and clubs; if you’re in Wengen then shake your tail feathers till the wee hours at the Blue Monkey club, or if you’re staying in Mürren you can go to the wonderfully cheesy Inferno, which has a DJ booth inside a pink Cadillac and serves flaming shooters! The Jungfrau area is also the proud host of the Lauberhorn World Cup during January so it’s worth seeing if you can visit while this is happening as it’s good fun to watch the skiers racing by and to soak up some of the lively atmosphere.
