It’s helpful to know when choosing a destination for Half-term ski breaks that France is very organised when it comes to ensuring that all their resorts don’t become inundated and stupidly busy for a couple of weeks a year. They stagger school holidays over several weeks to keep numbers manageable and queues reasonable.
Half-terms falls very much in the middle of the resort’s season, meaning that the snow around this time is normally fantastic. The top slope altitude of 2600m means that powder will be excellent, and skiers of all abilities will have good coverage on appropriate slopes, as 70% of the resort sits above the 2000m mark. It is a brilliant, but not especially popular resort in comparison to family favourite places like Les Gets or Avoriaz, so queues will be shorter and restaurants quieter.
The day-care in the resort is fantastic, with a number of options available to parents. The ‘Galipette 1’ nursery in 1800 is a warm and friendly nursery for 3-35 months with games, a meal and a sleep. ‘Galipette 2 ski’ is for children aged 3-9 y/o and focuses on alpine education as well as ski lessons. The ‘non-ski’ option is also for 3-9 y/o’s and still focuses on alpine education, with fun activities likes treasure hunts, ice-skating and sledging as well as indoor games a meal and a sleep. Finally, the resort offers a combination of day-care, lift pass and ski lessons in one handy deal. Children are taken and collected from ski lessons by staff and there’s an awards ceremony at the end of the week. Parents can choose any option above and enjoy skiing further afield on harder slopes with total peace of mind their children are being well looked after.
There is plenty going on the resort to keep children and indeed adults of any age occupied for a week. Go to the cinema or bowling for some family down time, or give husky riding a go for something a bit more adventurous.
