The Finnish tend to pull out all the stops throughout the festive season - if you want to spend Christmas day at home but still visit a winter wonderland before the 12 days of Christmas are out, this is the perfect chance to do so.

Pyha usually has a phenomenal firework display against the snowy pine forest backdrop and the instructors traditionally ski down the piste with torches just before the fireworks kick off - the electric atmosphere makes it hard to believe you’re in a small village in Finland!

Though you could spend all week pottering up and down the piste (the snow at this time of year is usually top notch), there are heaps of fun non-skiing things to do. Take the kids to the Kopara or Jaakkola reindeer parks to meet Rudolph and friends as they recover from their trip across the globe – reindeer safaris are an awesome way to experience the surroundings. Icelandic horse-riding and ice-karting are great for groups of friends. Whether you’re feeling a little worse for wear after one too many cloudberry liqueurs or fancy taking the family out for something different, a wander in the National Park (easily transformed to Narnia with a bit of imagination...) is well worth doing while you’re here. One of the village’s saunas or spas is the ultimate way to wind down and rejuvenate for the next day’s adventures... there’s always a spot of traditional sauna and ice swimming if the new year has given you a new lease of life!
