Seeing in the New Year in the mountains is an experience like no other, and Zurs will certainly live up to your expectations. Skiing on the first day of the year will certainly get it off to a good start- though you’ll find bettering the experience over the coming year difficult indeed.

On the evening itself, there are usually fireworks at midnight at Zug and Lech- Zug is the quieter of the two if you fancy a more intimate evening and the pretty streets of Lech will be teeming with revellers. There are usually more fireworks on the first of January as well- the Acoustic Firework show is fast becoming a must see event in the region. The fireworks are choreographed in sync with music and live performances, and with previous themes including ABBA, Michael Jackson and James Bond, you’ll end up kicking yourself if you miss it.

If you’re staying in a hotel for the week, be sure to check if they are running any special events- many host gala dinners on NYE, and waking up to a cooked breakfast is a dream on the first day of the year. Pick a package including flights if you want to spend Christmas at home before flying out to the slopes, though if you’re away for the whole festive season then you may need the extra luggage space afforded by a self-drive holiday.
