Spend New Year’s week surrounded by the Nock Mountains in this lovely South Austrian ski and spa resort. On the night itself, herald in the New Year in front of a roaring fire somewhere like the Einkehr, or party at the Take Five night club. In past years, the resort has opened the Kaiserburg cable car to give guests the opportunity to see the turning of midnight from halfway up a mountain, providing a spectacular view of the village itself and any fireworks taking place. They’ve also been known to open the Bärenhöhle mountainside bar and the Waldtratte restaurant. If you’re up for the drive, Klagenfurt is less than an hour away – see if it’s still hosting the New Year’s carnival this year.
There’s always the option to get an early night for a ski-filled January 1st but if you’ve overdone it on the Glühwein, the St Katherin and Römerbad spas will have the facilities you need to gently rejuvenate.
Most importantly, there are as many opportunities to ski as there are to celebrate – being on grassland, the slopes don’t need a huge amount of build up to be skiable. Nearly 100% of the slopes have artificial snow cover in case a top-up is needed, which is always good to hear at the first part of the season. Set your sights on the Franz Klammer and FIS K-70 downhills for a fantastic ski-related New Year’s resolution and start the year off in the tracks of Alpine champions.
