This friendly Austrian spa town is a terrific place to escape for a week of skiing, wellness and tradition during the half term break.
Snow conditions are rarely a worry at this time of year - often with large dustings of fresh powder. Queuing is kept to a minimum during busy periods (the lifts can transport 35,000 people an hour) and with wide groomed pistes, you should have plenty of space to enjoy your time on the snow.
85% of the runs are graded for intermediates, so if you’ve already had a few weeks on the snow, you’ll be free to ski mile after mile. Those with less experience have their pick of tuition with schools like Skischule Brunner. There are fun themed snow gardens for the little ones, where they can learn in a relaxed environment. A terrific run to ski as a family is the lovely long Priedröfabfahrt (blue 17 on the piste map) that winds through pines. For mums, dads and teachers needing a well deserved break, a dip in one of the St. Kathrein and Römerbad thermal baths should take the weight off those tired ski legs for a while. There are even special areas for children if the kids are tagging along, so there’s no excuse not to indulge... If you’re looking for a little more thrill, head to one of the toboggan runs - the Wöllaner Nock’s is our favourite as it’s up above the pistes.
