Ski holidays in Australia

The Great Dividing Range between New South Wales and Victoria is home to the bulk of Australia’s ski resorts, with a handful more in the hills of Tasmania. Hundreds of millions years old, the sheer age of these peaks makes them lower and rounder than the Alps and Rockies – here skiing and snowboarding are more about cruising wide slopes than shooting down sharp gradients and long valley runs (the longest piste is just shy of 6km).
You can seek out black runs, parks and off piste if you want them, but the general easygoing nature of the ski areas is what we love most about the mountain resorts down under. To top off a relaxed week on the snow, hillside lodgings keep hassle to a minimum and feel-good après ends each ski day on a high. Visit between June and September for the main ski season, then head back to the Northern Hemisphere for more alpine action…

Most popular ski resorts in Australia

NSW’s Perisher and Thredbo vie for top spot when it comes to Australia’s ski resorts, the first having more pistes than anywhere else in Australia, and the second laying claim to the nation’s highest and longest runs.
In Victoria, Hotham’s famed for its high, expert terrain, while Fall’s Creek has a big freestyle scene – both a 4.5 hour drive from Melbourne making them popular for day trips.
