Tucked away in Wyoming’s Grand Teton National Park and world-renowned for its white knuckle terrain, Jackson Hole is hands down one of the best places to ski on earth. Beginning life as a cowboy town, Jackson itself is actually about a half an hour away from the ski resort. Confusingly, it’s Teton Village which is at the base of the mountain, housing numerous accommodation types as well as a selection of restaurants and bars. “Jackson Hole” refers to the 80km valley running through the mountains, which is...
The ski area encompasses 2,500 acres of exceptionally varied terrain but where it really comes into its own is its offering for advanced skiers, with the longest skiable vertical in the USA and legendary descents like Corbett’s Couloir to test even the hardiest of athletes. World renowned for its difficult terrain, this isn’t famous for being a family friendly resort but that said, it has more beginner terrain than you’d find in most European resorts and the tuition and childcare at the Kids Ranch is superb...
Whilst quieter and more ski-focused, Teton does house a number of restaurants and bars. The Mangy Moose is one of the most popular destinations for après; located a few buildings from the base of the cable car, it does signature drinks and a killer après menu. If you’re looking for a sit down meal, try the Alpenrose for an authentic Swiss-style eatery, including the much sought after fondue that simply makes a ski holiday. Jackson town offers more in the way of après, so if you don’t fancy finishing the p...

"Helpful staff, ski bus right outside"

The hotel is on the edge of Jackson Hole, it’s not in the resort itself. Snow King is a bit of a mini resort that’s right outside the hotel, it has some slopes which might be good for families or getting your ski legs back. When you’re over skiing Jackson Hole, you can actually see the Snow King resort across the valley as it’s quite distinct. Getting to the ski area was an initial concern when I first arrived but it was very straight forward. There’s a pick up point right outside the hotel, 10 feet away from the hotel door, and this is the bus’ first stop point, so you can always get a seat on the way to the resort. The Jackson Hole ski area is paradise for experts with some of the steepest verticals on the continent; it’s also good for families and individual skiers. I would recommend coming back slightly earlier rather than waiting for the lifts to close so the bus is not too crowded. I usually left at about quarter to four – the lifts shut at 4:30. The hotel is also the last point on the journey back so you can usually get a seat when people get off if you don’t get one at first. The bus ride to and from the resort is complementary but you have to collect your two tickets (one for there and one for back) in the mornings from the reception desk as you need the coupon so they don’t charge you on the bus. It’s all really easy as that’s what everyone else does, and I didn’t have any problems with the process throughout my stay. The hotel is a 10 minute walk to Jackson Hole town. It’s a real cowboy town, laid out in the standard American grid format – you can literally walk around the town in half an hour and there are lots of interesting photographic shops as well as bars and cowboy gun shops. The hotel was fine, it was being renovated in areas, they were laying carpets and things were boarded up while I was here which was not a problem for me, but there’s probably a nice new reception area there now. I didn’t use the facilities much, but there’s a pool outside, when you go out the back way towards the tourist office for the local ski area, the pool is on your left. There’s a nice dining room but again I ate out so didn’t use it. The rooms are functional with good quality TV and good bathrooms. It has everything you need with a downstairs locker for skis or you can take them into your room for more security. The staff were very helpful. I would definitely recommend spending a day over at Grande Targhee (or “Grand Foggy” if you’re a local!). You can get here from the same bus stop outside the hotel, the minibus picks you up and takes you back at the end of the day, it takes about an hour and a half to get there. Grande Targhee is lot smaller than Jackson Hole (about 30% of the size), it’s a nice area for families with lots of blue runs. The views are spectacular too, better than the ones from Jackson Hole resort.
