Spread across a number of villages and hamlets, the Serre Chevalier valley’s not your usual alpine resort – but that’s what we like about it. While you won’t find a main hub of restaurants, bars and accommodation, a stay in one of the villages gives you a more ski-focussed, budget friendly week on the mountains. Briancon, Chantemerle, Villeneuve and Monêtier are the four main bases, each with their own character, but all with terrific lift access to the mountain. Typical French Briancon sits at the fa...

"Brilliant Apt, shame about staff"

The apartment we had was brilliant, the situation is great and it took less than 5 minutes to get to the main ski lift. The walk is slightly uphill but not majorly. We had an issue with the cooker not working but once it was fixed it was fine. There are a couple of supermarkets but the food range isn’t major and it’s easier to eat out as you can eat out so cheap here (there’s a good takeaway pizza place that we got a few times). There were six of us in one apartment, two in the double room, two in the twin room and two on the sofa which had a pull out double bed. The only thing that affected our holiday was that the owners of the apartments were awful and the reception staff refused to speak to us in English which made things really difficult. They were very unhelpful when the oven broke. They insisted on taking a credit card for us to get another key because there were six of us and then took 80 Euros off the card for cleaning, even though we had cleaned the place throughout to their stipulations and done everything it said we had to do.
