Skiing Finland for New Year 2024/25

If you want to spend Christmas at home but ski somewhere festive straight after, there’s nowhere finer than Finland. The ski resorts here are found in Finnish Lapland – which everyone knows is where the REAL Santa and his reindeer live – so you can mix days skiing snow-sure, easily navigable ski areas with all kinds of winter wonderland adventures. Most resorts put on a stunning New Year’s Eve fireworks display, and if you’re lucky Mother Nature might chip in with a show of the northern lights…

Hotels & cabins

They might not be the biggest resorts in the world but we love the range of accommodation on offer in the Finish ski resorts. You can choose between everything from cute log cabins in the woods to big hotels, slap bang in resort centres… Decide whether you want meals included or a DIY board basis and pick facilities from a simple sauna to multiple pools and wellness facilities. Whatever you go for, make the booking process hassle free with an accommodation, flights and transfers package that sorts out everything in one go with ATOL protection.

New Year snow & weather

This might be early season skiing for the rest of the world, but when you’re this close to the arctic circle, most ski resorts have been running since November and snowy a good deal prior to that. Suffice it to say the chances of thick, fresh snow cover are gloriously high. So are your chances of spotting the northern lights, since daylight hours are at their lowest (which won’t detract from your slope-time, as the ski areas are floodlit). It’s also likely to be really rather cold, so you’ll want to pack your best thermals and layer them up – sometimes snow suits can be provided with the rest of your trip.

New Year activities

The Finnish ski resorts are some of the world’s best when it comes to awesome activities. If you’re coming for Christmassy adventures, visits to Santa’s cottage and reindeer sleigh rides are pastimes all age groups will struggle to forget. Husky and snowmobile safaris, ice fishing, snowshoeing and overnight stays in igloos are other favourite things to do here. You can start the new year afresh with a traditional Finnish ice swimming and sauna experience, or head out into the wilderness to seek out the mythical northern lights. Most resorts put on fireworks for New Year’s Eve, and you’ll often find special events in the local bars and restaurants too.
