An old-school village, modern resort and whacking great ski area - Laax is somewhere to soak up the sights, shred your socks off and make marvellous memories on the mountains.

Laax Resort

The term Laax refers to three things, firstly a typical old Graubünden village (Laax Dorf) secondly the ski resort’s base station area (Laax Murschetg) and thirdly the ski area shared between the aforementioned Laax’s as well as Flims, Falera, Trin and Sagogn.

Laax Dorf has an olde worlde feel to it, its lake edged with traditional buildings (Haus Arpagaus the oldest having been built in 1580).

The base station is much more modern, with minimalist builds providing doorstep skiing from the edge of the slopes.

The Laax ski area is one of Switzerland’s biggest, with 224km of runs around the Crap Sogn Gion mountain and one of the world’s best freestyle scenes. It’s the freestyling that puts the area on the map – the four parks here include every feature you could dream of (including the biggest superpipe on the planet). Events like the European Freeski Open are hosted here each year and they’ve also built an indoor Freestyle Academy where athletes can train year round. The whole thing gives Laax a young, trendy feel, with an après ski and dining scene to reflect that.

Zurich, Basel and Friedrichshafen airports have shuttles connecting them to the resort, or you can take the train to Chur and get the PostBus for the last leg of the journey.

Skiing/BoardingSkiing in Laax

Gentle blues set off from glorious heights of 2570m up on the Vorab glacier, letting learners and improvers enjoy the finest views and snow conditions. Families will love doing the rounds at Alp Dado. Ami Sabi, the local magician, has created a wonderland at the base station, where children can learn to ski in a fun, relaxed (and little bit magical) setting.

For more advanced skiers, dozens of red runs trail down the glacier and through the treeline, ending up at the village, base station and in neighbouring Flims. Nagens and Mutta Rodunda serve up a healthy challenge, featuring a 13km descent linking runs from La Siala into Flims. The FIS run (black #65) is a must ski and there’s a spectacular trail down the backside of the Vorab into Alp Ruschein. La Siala has some incredible off piste terrain, and a local guide will be able to show you the best of it.

Snowpark LAAX is known for its Olympic standard features and the world’s longest continuous half pipe… Suffice it to say freestylers of every level will have an absolute blast here.

Laax Apres Ski

Il Pup in Rocksresort has a rustic and relaxed atmosphere, serving the likes of Punk IPA. Indy Bar’d is part of the same building and has good chill out music. After a few drinks at Camino, you can grab a takeaway pizza or order from the bar menu. Crapbar’s decided to change its name (we wonder why!) to rockslounge – and still serves brilliant cocktails. We like the sun terrace at Legna Bar over in Flims, just remember to save time to get the lifts back to Laax before they stop running…

Food wise, Nooba’s menu is often likened to Wagamama, while Tegia Larnags serves regional favourites like fondue and raclette. Don’t miss the Vacca tipi where you can sit on cow hides by a huge central fire and feast on amazing steaks.

Beyond skiing and snowboarding, activities include skating on lake Laax, paragliding and helicopter flights – for an incredible view of the landscape. There are spas galore for pampering, and you’ll find an indoor swimming pool by the lake with a waterslide. Don’t miss the Bonaduz indoor karting track either!

Laax and Flims are very well equipped with indoor and outdoor sports facilities and other leisure attractions, making it a good choice for those interested in multi-winter sports holidays or those not interested in skiing at all. Outdoors there are two 3km long toboggan runs, the opportunity to try sleigh rides, dog sledding, helicopter sightseeing flights, ice skating, parascending, hot air ballooning, snowshoeing, horse riding or hiking on up to 60km (37 miles) of cleared trails. Indoors the Sportscentre in Flims has an ice rink, fitness equipment, four table-tennis tables. There's indoor tennis (2 courts) and pools at the Park Hotels Waldhaus and in the Sporthotel Signina, and more indoor pools in the hotels Adula, Crap Ner, Laaxerhof and Schweizerhof in Flims. There are two museums in the Park Hotels Waldhaus in Flims - the Belle Epoque museum and the Grisons Olgiati. There is also a gallery - Eule Art, and a local history and folklore collection in Laax. The resort also has a library.

Me and 2 friends visited for a long weekend at the end of January 2020. We only heard of LAAX because of it's famed snow parks, but we were pleasantly surprised by the extent, quality and variety of the slopes, it is a intermediate skiers paradise. The runs from the Vorab glacier are breathtaking, along wit... + more

Families in Laax

There are more family facilities than you can shake a stick at in Laax, both on and off the mountain. We love the pint sized Burton Riglet Park for little freestylers, who will be wowed watching the pros in action in the main park. The Ami Sabi Snow Wonderland is a magical place to learn skiing and there are terrific childcare facilities for those too young to ski.
