2300m at the top of the Three Valleys ski area, VT is the highest ski resort in Europe and part of the biggest linked ski area on the planet. While it's a place for people who, above all else, love to ski, you'll also find some of the country's best après including the legendary Folie Douce, as well as weird and wonderful activities like the 1300m Tyrolienne zip wire. Olde worlde gallic charm it isn't, but skiers will wake up to find some of the best snow in the Alps on their doorstep, and the views over the...
At the summit of the largest ski area in the world and bordering the Vanoise National Park, this is a spectacular place to ski and board. Beginners are well catered for on nursery slopes by the Rond Point des Pistes, where the magic carpets often don't require a lift pass. Kids will love the Junior Park, while the Musaraigne and Campagnols runs in the beginner's area and the new Deux Combes green are perfect to practice on. With a bit more confidence, take the Pionniers or Plein Sud chairs for some cruisy lon...
The après ski here easily rivals other top resorts in the Alps. If you haven't already had the Folie Douce experience, head just under the Plein Sud lift where the "dancefloor on top of the world" is heaving from 3 pm. Another place to party is Bar 360 at the end of the blue Moraine run, which always has live music and cheaper drinks. Back in town, Rue de Gebroulaz is a hub of lively bars where O'Connells is the local Irish pub. The Frog and Roastbeef is a long-time favourite of Brits. L'Eclipse on Galerie Caro...

"Smaller than expected but overall very good"

Jonathan Akehurst, Bristol
4/ out of 5
The Koh I Nor apartments are attached to the main hotel. Overall our apartment was very good. On arrival it struck us as being slightly smaller than we’d imagined based on the images. We’d booked a 3 bed instead of a 2 bed for that very reason, so that we could use the bunk beds for storing our suitcases and ski gear. The bedroom my wife and I had was a little on the small side, while the other was more reasonable. After a few days we’d become used to it all. We had a reasonably spacious lounge area, and the kitchen was well equipped. We also enjoyed good views. The hotel itself has a really nice, ambient atmosphere. The lounge and bar area are really good. We didn’t use the restaurants but others who did seemed to enjoy them. That the lounge bar area has a nice big balcony where you could watch people skiing down from the upper levels. We took great amusement getting back to the hotel, getting a pot of tea and watching people making their way down from the disco bar up there on the mountainside! My only criticism of the hotel is that they have a people carrier/transit to give people a lift as there’s a bit of a gradient on the route into town. The theory was that when you were in the town, you rang up and they’d come and pick you up. However a number of times we rang them, reception said “10 minutes!” and we were still waiting 20-30 minutes later as it never arrived... In the end we decided it was easier to walk, it was just a shame that they advertised a courtesy bus service that didn’t really materialise. We didn’t find the walk too bad, it took about 10 minutes or less. The Koh I Nor hotel is ski in, ski out, but from the apartment the arrangement is a little different. First you have to carry your skis across a courtyard, through the door into the main building, up some stairs and through the ski shop – and then you can ski out. It wasn’t a problem if you were staying in the hotel, but from the apartments it was a little nuisance. If we visited Val Thorens again we would definitely stay in the Koh I Nor again, since it’s far enough out that you can have a quiet ski holiday. It was nice being away from the noise and the walk into town and back when we went out for dinner etc. wasn’t too onerous.
