Overview: hotel description: Hotel Viking description

NB: while the Supplier rating is 3.5 Star, the Official rating is 3 Star.

Sitting in the most prominent position in Morzine, the Viking Hotel is a great choice if you're after genuine ski-in, ski-out convenience. It’s located at the top of the Pleney gondola, so you can be first on the slopes, with fresh snow for powder hounds and panoramic views of Morzine at the bottom of the mountain. The resort is connected to the hotel by the Pleney gondola, which runs into the evening.

There are few better places in resort to grab lunch or while away a couple of sun-drenched hours than the Viking’s outdoor terrace. Be aware that it can get busy at peak times, but you get a nice mix of the hotel’s relaxed atmosphere and mountain-resort buzz in the air. Make sure you find time to relax in the hotel’s outdoor pool, which neighbours the slopes and the terrace.

The interior of the hotel is a mix of comfortable yet un-showy Alpine styling in the communal areas and contemporary bedrooms. There are also plenty more of the facilities you’d expect, like an on-site Skiset desk - so you can pick up your equipment without having to leave the hotel - plus extras like a once-weekly disco, which compensates for the nights when the gondola closes earlier and you can't make it down to town.

When it comes down to eating and drinking, the Viking is hard to beat. Breakfasts are an affair in themselves, the options are varied and there's enough to get you ready for the active day ahead. And in the evenings, you'll get unlimited (yes, unlimited) free red and rosé wine to accompany your scrumptious buffet dinners - we can hear the 'cheers' already.

You’ll also have complimentary access to the excellent hotel-run kids’ club. It runs during French school holidays for six days and one evening per week, all season for kids aged 3-5 years, and during French school holidays for 6-17 years. They can enjoy a range of activities under the supervision of qualified, English-speaking professionals. Each week has a different theme, so your kids could be rehearsing for a sci-fi fantasy show, or painting pictures of pretty plants. For the older ones, there are sports tournaments, creative workshops and even discos.

Please note:

Check in between 4pm and 7pm (Sunday to Friday), or from 4pm to 9pm on Saturdays. On arrival, customers must provide a deposit of €250 on either a debit or a credit card - payment by cash or other cards is not permitted.

Non-skiers will need to purchase a walker's pass (€75 for 6 days) to use the cable car from the hotel into the village of Morzine. The hotel is not suitable for people with reduced mobility due to its location on the piste, a short uphill walk from the gondola. Please wear sensible shoes on transfer day. All customers staying at the Viking will receive a free walkers pass for the day fo arrival (Saturday) in order to use the Pleney gondola to be able to get back and forth from resort centre.

The dress code for evening meals is smart/casual.

Getting Here

The hotel is located at the top of the gondola and is accessible 7 days a week by gondola:
· Continuously from 9am to 5:30pm and every half hour from 5:30-8pm
· Accessible on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays every half hour from 8pm to 2am.
Guests must have either a minimum ski pass for Morzine-Les Gets or a pedestrian package which can be purchased directly through us or at the gondola boxes. For the day of departure the descent will be free.

"Cramped family room but good location"

Kate Markham, Hungerford
2/ out of 5
The hotel is in a good location and it’s very convenient to be able to ski in / ski out... however the rooms were very poor quality. We knew we weren’t getting an interconnecting room but had booked an en-suite family room, the bathroom was fine but the room itself turned out to be 4 single beds pushed together side by side. Bar a foot down the right hand side of the far bed and a foot at the end of the beds, there was no room at all and no space to even hang things to dry. The Viking is mainly a family hotel and a lot of other people were in the same situation as us which wasn’t great. Overall, everything was a little tired and in need of a bit of TLC, but it had everything we were looking for. The staff were OK and we had no issues with the food.

"Could do with an update but you can’t find a better location"

The hotel isn’t bad, it could do with a refurb but is very clean and the staff were really friendly and helpful. We had a decent sized room and were happy with the balcony, the view is just breaktaking. We also liked the access to the outdoor pool. The food wasn’t bad either and you do get a variation. Some nights they offered a choice of 2-3 main courses and they had a buffet for starters every night. In the morning you come out with your skis, put your skis on and then go down on the ski track that’s just outside the hotel. It would take you 5-10 minutes to get up to the hotel by the ski lift. It’s worth knowing before you go here that the ski bus only carries on until 2-3 in the morning on two nights a week, for the rest of the week it only goes until 8pm. There is a bar in the hotel and they do special events like karaoke each night. A lot of the residents had been coming back to the hotel Viking for a few years, which says a lot, and we would go back here on another ski holiday.

"Thank you for our family ski holiday over New Year"

Further to our telephone conversation I write to thank you for arranging our family ski holiday over the New Year. The Hotel Viking was fantastic. The food was of a very high standard, the staff were exceptionally helpful and could not have done anything else to may our stay more relaxing. It is worth noting that the ski/boot room can get very busy, and be prepared to queue for your ski hire at the very small shop on site in the hotel. (Worth doing this before checking in !! ) Also it is quite chaotic when leaving, as the Plenney lift operators only use 2 cars to get everyone and their luggage down to the waiting coaches. Thank you very much for help and advice and I hope to speak with you again when booking next years ski break. Kind regards Tony
