The closest lifts – Kirchbuehelift and Sonnenlift – are just one minute away if you cross the road, click in and ski down. Five minutes’ walk up the high street on the other side, take the Gamsleiten lifts for some wider black runs. Being in the centre of resort, the Skiworld hire shop is just outside, so not far to go for collecting your equipment. On the high street, there’s several restaurants and cafés including Café Servus – great for a quick lunch stop.
The friendly Hotel Schütz is a real home-from-home in the Austrian mountains. Set in a beautifully picturesque location in the centre of town, you’re a few steps from the local bars and amenities. And just minutes from the nearest lifts.
Expect spacious rooms, all decorated in a similar style, with traditional pine furnishings and modern touches. There’s several room types available at the hotel from a small twin room to a larger twin for up to 4 people.
If the long days on the mountain are taking their toll, spend a few hours in the wellness area – go for a dip in the decorative indoor pool, sweat it out in the sauna, or indulge in a massage. For a social evening, head to the spacious lounge and bar area for a drink.
Start the day right with a varied buffet breakfast and selection of coffees – and it’s served until 10.30am so you can still have a lie-in after a night of après. You’ll get an afternoon snack to keep you going until dinnertime, when you can tuck into a 4-course meal in front of the open fire in the atmospheric restaurant, which also has lovely mountain views. Look out for the weekly farmers’ buffet, too.

Austrian twin beds
Austrian twin beds are very common in Central Europe. They’re simply one large bed frame containing two single mattresses, both with separate duvets and linen sets, that cannot be separated. Separate twin beds are less common and can often be head to head beds, rather than side by side, if they are available.

Obertauern stands apart from other Austrian resorts in more ways than one; it’s the nation’s only purpose-built resort offering ski in/ski out convenience whilst impressively maintaining Austrian charm. It has unusually high altitudes for Austria, with pistes peaking at 2313m, and the ski area is built in a one-of-a-kind circuit where you always return to your starting point, whichever direction you ski.
