Zermatt belongs to Switzerland’s Valais canton, which rubs shoulders with the Italian Alps. You’ll find it surrounded by nearly a third of Europe’s 4000m peaks and - most notably - right at the foot of the Matterhorn. Even if you haven’t heard of this mountain, chances are you’d recognise it - national landmark of Switzerland, inspiration for the Toblerone and a peak photographed more than any other. Besides blow-your-beanie-off scenery, these mighty mountains come with a cool climate, ever-white glac...
There are 200km of runs in the local area alone and a massive 360km overall if you count the Italian side of the Matterhorn too. Together with Cervina, Zermatt forms the 'Matterhorn Ski Paradise' where SNO lovers of all abilities are blessed with high altitude terrain - and lots of it! Everyone’s a winner in a ski area this big and brilliant, but if we had to pick where it really shines, we’d say it’s especially fantastic for intermediate and advanced level skiers and snowboarders. If you’re a keen begi...
Zermatt was voted the world’s best après ski resort by the World Snow Awards in 2012, making it a wise choice if you want a whale of a time post-skiing. Sure – it doesn’t come cheap, but if you want quality, you won’t find better. Across sixty bars and numerous nightclubs, you can relax, unwind and party through the night. Harry’s Bar is the place to dance to cheesy pop and Papperla offers a pubby atmosphere but you can’t come to Zermatt without being tempted into the Hennu Stall (at the end of the Fu...

"Big room, really good food, not plush but great value"

Mr Penny, Wokingham

The hotel was a lot better than I expected given the price we paid and the star rating. We had a big room, almost like a suite which was useful as there were 8 of us and we could all sit together for drinks in the evenings. It wasn’t plush but it was clean and the beds were comfortable, everything worked. The food in the restaurant was really good, better than I had expected. They had a set four or five course menu every evening, always with a buffet salad bar and a variety of food, all very well cooked. My daughter is lactose intolerant and they catered pretty well for her which can sometimes be a problem in hotels, but wasn’t here. My only criticism would be that there’s quite a nice lounge area which in theory would have been nice for pre dinner drinks but, because there were some kitchens below, it had really strong cooking smells in the evening and smelt of disinfectant in the morning after they had cleaned everything up. This didn’t affect us as there’s a bar attached to the hotel where we went for drinks and cakes after skiing, but it would have been nice to have the option of some pre dinner drinks there if we wanted. The hotel is pretty well located with an easy walk to the lift station that takes about 5 minutes. There’s a ski hire shop opposite where you can leave your skis and boots so you don’t have to walk with them. Zermatt town isn’t the easiest place to get to the mountain from, but it couldn’t have been easier than from where we stayed. I stayed here with my family and my sister’s family; the kids are all quite grown up so I can’t really comment on what it’s like for young families. It was good for the group of 8 of us though, we had a table for 8 in the restaurant for breakfast and dinner every day and they coped with us fine, so I would recommend it to groups.

"A solid 4 out of 5"

We had a wonderful week, the Perren is a really nice hotel. Its location is pretty handy as it’s near the bus stops and lifts and just a 5 minute walk from the town which was perfect. We didn’t use the spa and pool but the bedrooms were big and roomy. The beds were alright, not quite like home but they gave us a couple of pillows to make it more comfortable. The food was fine, with set menus you either like what you get or you don’t, but it was alright for us. If you enjoy 5* hotels and expect the Hilton you’ll find it a bit basic, but if you want somewhere clean and pleasant it’s a solid 4/5.
