Overview: hotel description: Hotel Gentiana description

A traditional Savoyard-style building, with solid stone walls and timber cladding, the Hotel Gentiana has been welcoming guests since 1964. And many return year after year for the homely atmosphere and easy access to the large Espace Killy ski area.

Inside, the décor has kept pace with the times. There are plenty of comfy sofas in the lounge and the wood-panelled bedrooms are simple but inviting, with crisp white linen and patterned curtains and cushions adding a stylish touch. Step out the front door and you’re only minutes away from the lifts and the ski school meeting point – so you can have a leisurely breakfast and still be one of the first on the slopes.

Don’t let the unassuming dining room fool you – the food here is top-notch. Every evening you’ll be treated to a choice of dishes for the three-course meal. And once a week, there’s a speciality menu with Savoyarde dishes like raclette and pierrade – a table-top barbeque experience where you cook your own meat.

The indoor pool is the place to be at the end of the day. The large windows face the mountains, so you can enjoy sunset views while having a relaxing dip. And there’s a sauna and steam room too, where you can soothe those sore ski legs.

Espace Killy ski area Fantastic après ski High altitude skiing

Tignes is somewhere you can ski longer, higher and further than most other resorts in the Alps. Owing its snow-reliability to the Grande Motte glacier, the local ski area is joined with Val d’Isere’s to form the mammoth Espace Killy - intermediates will have a whale of a time here. Choose between 5 different villages, whether your priority is convenience, cosiness or cheap accommodation. Tignes also has one of the most famous New Year parties in the Alps.

Tignes ski resort (pronounce it 'Teens') is one half of the stunning Espace Killy, one of the biggest linked ski areas in France. Because of its high-altitude terrain and access to the Grande Motte glacier, the resort is open both earlier and later in the season than many others and often the lifts are running for short periods of summer skiing. Predominantly purpose built, the resort itself is divided into 5 villages, each different in its own way but all well linked by lifts and bus services. The main area...
With varied pistes at a high altitude, the ski area has impressive powdered terrain for skiers and boarders alike. Beginners can practice on the nursery slopes at Le Lac and Le Lavachet, where you'll find gentle, quiet runs that are accessible via free beginners' lifts. Le Bollin at Val Claret is another conveniently situated green and Grattalu is a lovely wide blue for those wanting to build confidence. Tignes is incredible if you ski at an intermediate level, with miles of powdery blue and red runs includi...
While it's said that those who appreciate Tignes do so for the serious skiing over the après ski, this doesn't do justice to the fact that Tignes' 60+ bars/pubs and 4 night clubs provide some of the best nightlife in the Alps. All villages have their fair share of places to eat and drink, and with a shuttle bus service running 24 hours, you can enjoy your evening without worrying about the journey back. Jam bar is small but with a great atmosphere and Loop bar pretty much offers it all: with live sport, world c...
