Up in the Rhaetian Alps at 1883m, rubbing shoulders with Trentino and Lombardy, the purpose-built town of Tonale is one of the highest resorts in the country. As a beginner, having to take loads of lifts to reach easy runs can be a bit daunting. You don’t have to worry about this here, with most blue runs near hotels and bars, for those all-important hot chocolate breaks. Nursery slopes with magic carpets let learners work on snowploughs, in short, manageable bursts - when you begin to feel more comfortable, take the Valena chair lift for a couple of mid-length blues. 60% of the slopes have been carefully crafted for intermediates, leading in all directions for ...
Of course, one of the best things about Italy is its delectable delicacies. Whether you're looking for fast food to fill you after a hard days skiing (try La Torretta for their filling pizza) or a more authentic, native dining experience (El Bait serves local, genuine cuisine), you won't be disappointed. Il Focolare is well worth a visit for classic pasta and tiramisu – make sure you book early! Eating on a budget is easy, with fast food dishes from 5€, and you can usually grab a three-course meal for about 10...

"Overall we enjoyed staying here"

Catherine Harris, Guildford
4/ out of 5
The hotel building is divided into 2 parts and we stayed in the older part (I think because we got a last minute deal). If you want the modern part, it’s probably worth checking when you book. As you went down the corridors and stairwells you could tell that the older part was visibly older. Unfortunately we couldn’t get WiFi in the room we had – we’d paid for it but it didn’t extend that far so they refunded us. The room itself was dated but clean and we had a balcony which was nice. If you want a sunny balcony you need to stay on the front side of the hotel above the entrance area as round the back of the hotel doesn’t get much sun. There’s a huge spa there which was quite nice, you pay a weekly rate and it’s definitely worth it. It has a huge bubble area, small plunge pool, steam room and outdoor swimming pool area. The food was very good, there’s one big dining area what meanders around 3 rooms. We always had an aperitif as a small taster in the evenings, followed by a buffet for starters which everybody dived on (usual salads, slices of pizza for kids, cold meats etc) then main course and desert. To get to and from the piste, you come out the back entrance, cross the road to another building and behind that building is the ski lift that took you up or back down (all in all probably 3-4 minutes).
