Not just a sunny ski resort, Villars has an impressive ski area and caters really well for families. Topped with olde village charm, views of Lake Geneva, Mont-Blanc and the Dents du Midi and restaurants that even Heston raves about, a holiday here is likely to be a hard one to forget.

Just west of Lake Geneva, Villars is part of the French-speaking region of the ‘Alpes Vaudoises’. The resort sits on a balcony at 1300m and is mostly south-facing – ideal for sun-soaked vistas of the Portes du Soleil and even sights of Mont Blanc on a clear day. This eco-savvy destination is one of the greenest resorts in the world and has been awarded the Flocon Vert for sustainable development. The Swiss tourist office has also recognised it for the awesome children’s facilities (they’ve offered free l...
The local ski area covers the four peaks of Petit Chamossaire, Grand Chamossaire and Chaux Ronde above Villars and the Croix des Chaux behind Gryon. There’s some fantastic beginner skiing on the designated areas towards the back of town – as these are off the main piste network, they’re usually free to use. Venture towards the bowl at Bretaye where you’ll find some wide, sweeping blue runs like Bretay-Orsay and Chaux Ronde (the main learners’ slope). The Populaire Bretaye run meets the Lapins slope for a...
Kick things off during the afternoon by settling for vin chauds at a slopeside café like Col De Bretaye. You can relax on the terrace with a sunny view of Mt Blanc and the surrounding runs - if you haven’t had lunch yet, we’ve heard the steak tartare is amazing! Down in the village, the Plaza el Gringo has 3 bars that are popular with both tourists and locals. The liveliest is the El Gringo disco and there’s also the VIP club and Charlie’s that do a good range of drinks and have DJ’s most nights. The Moo...

"We had a ball - great family holiday"

There were good and bad points of the actual accommodation – we were disappointed with the room size which didn’t quite meet our expectations. We had one of the rooms at the back and it didn’t have a view. The food was excellent with a very good variety. There was lots of vegetarian stuff for my wife as well as lots of good meat options. The only thing it wasn’t great for was breakfasts, there were a lot of egg options and typically continental cuts of meat that aren’t great quality. You couldn’t get a decent orange juice for love nor money. Other than this the whole set up was very good as an all-in package. They did have a very nice mint tea at the bar which we ended up having every day. The bar service was very good and they had some good quality drinks. The white house wine was really nice (slightly nicer in the bar than in the restaurant). At lunch there’s a restaurant on the mountain that’s fantastic, it had a real après ski party atmosphere and the food was brilliant – that was part of the all inclusive too. The location couldn’t be better as you’re right on top of the funicular railway, you literally walk downstairs and it’s there, as is the bus that takes you to the telecabine. There’s a kids club, sauna and a nice outdoor pool. The lessons are what made it for us all, they were excellent and the whole family really progressed and could parallel turn by the end of the week. Both kids won medals in their respective lessons. Everything was very civilised and there was a real mix of people. I was skiing with 2 Israelis, 3 French people and a Russian girl, they all took time to speak English the minute I turned up so there wasn’t a moment that I felt left out. Our ski guide was the retired Vice President of Club Med America and what a character he was, a fantastic guide. There was some nice entertainment in the evenings. The staff were really good, I don't know when they get time off! One of the waitresses came skiing with us one day which I guess is a perk of the job, I wouldn’t mind working there!
