Spent half term week at Stoanerhof, Mayrhofen. 14 of us in our group, mixed ability but experienced skiers, and about 20 other guests in 3 or 4 family groups. All mixed well, staff were excellent, great guiding, fabulous food and they couldn't do enough for us. We had a couple of injuries, but no drama's made. ... + more

A big chalet, its location is as good as it gets if your heart is set on staying in a chalet in the charming resort of Mayrhofen. If the snow is good, you’ll love the challenge of off-pisting it back to your door. Otherwise it’s a short two hundred metre walk from the bottom of the Ahorn Gondola. The Penken G... + more

Near the end of the stunning Ziller Valley, Mayrhofen exudes Austrian charm in a lively, cheerful atmosphere. Dating back to 1511, its architecture's charmingly old school, yet all mod-cons are present and correct. The resort's location is fantastic: Only an hour's drive from Innsbruck airport. The family-friendly nature doesn't stop with its convenient location – restaurants cater for children excellently, kids activities are abundant, and the ski schools are well known as some of the best. Mayrhofen is highly recommended for beginners who can learn under the excellent tuition of local instructors on both the Ahorn and Penken mountains. Two of us stayed here at the end of the season, the resort was a bit quiet, don’t think many chalets were still going, but I definitely got the impression it’s livelier there in busier weeks. The snow was ok, not the best as it was the end of the season but it had been a good year of snow so we were very lucky. The chalet was nice – quite hotel like with your own private space and with enough people to be sociable. The staff were all lively and definitely added to the fun, all making sure they ended the last week of the year on a high! The food was good and you can’t complain with free wine all week! The chalet isn’t bang in the centre of town but it’s close to one of the lifts (you can get the bus from that lift to the main area).

Very pleasantly surprised with the location, accommodation and staff. We stayed over the Christmas period 2012 and could not have asked for a more friendlier bunch. Professionally lead by Helen - Sam, Hannah, George and Chris, together with the resort ski guide Emily - made our stay very enjoyable indeed. The meals served every day by Chris were second to none which always helps after an exhausting day skiing. Mayrhofen is a great ski location and highly recommended. It's very apparent that money has been reinvested into the area with high standard gondalas and chairlifts on every mountain. The Ahorn is a short walk and ideal for getting your ski legs back with gentle runs at the top and some challenging reds back into town. The Penkenbahn Gondola is about a 10 minute walk which is fine in the morning but we caught the bus back in the evenings after a great day skiing. I also tried the paragliding - a company recommended by the tour operator - and what an experience. Well worth a go!

Had a really good week here. Both the chalet host and ski rep were really nice. They were trying out a new menu which was really good on some days and didn’t work as well on others… it was all traditional Austrian dishes served as a standard 3 course meal – some of the salads were really lovely. They also tried to be inventive at breakfasts, but I’d have been happy with bacon and eggs. It was still a good round up so long as you got there in time, although even if you didn’t they were quite affable and would sort you out with something. With no snow in the town, getting to/from the lifts or into town was a little bit of a bother, at the end of the day you want to walk as little as possible with ski boots and skis! If you were using the main Penken lift, you could get the bus back and then it would be a 5 minute walk but in the mornings it was a good 10-15 walk. The only downside I can think of (and it’s not even a really bad one) is that there isn’t a pool. It looks a bit like there’s a pool in the pictures but it’s actually just a sauna with a shower.

Just got back from a week at the Stoanerhof. There were 32 of us so we had the whole place to ourselves. Its a great chalet in a really good location close to the town. The Penken lift is a short walk away and the Ahorn lift is right by the chalet. The communal areas are fantastic for chatting and socialising with a big group. The staff were excellent and couldn't have done more for us. I highly recommend this chalet!! The ski lodge features really do make a difference. Having a choice of food and good quality table wine was excellent!

All mixed well, staff were excellent, great guiding, fabulous food and they couldn't do enough for us. We had a couple of injuries, but no drama's made. One criticism was of the resort itself - a rubbish, completely inadequate bus service with unhelpful drivers. Lift queues also not great but have to expect that at half term.

It’s an average chalet, near enough to the village but a bit far from the main lifts. The staff were good and the bedrooms were fine in terms of space. The food was pretty poor, they were really tight on portions and the chefs seemed inexperienced. There was plenty to drink though. Liked Mayrhofen as a resort and would go back, it’s a nice village with a good atmosphere.

Our bedroom was fine, it was kept very clean and had plenty of space. The guys who ran the chalet were very helpful and polite. The food was ok, not the best standard I’ve experienced in a chalet but I know it was the end of the season and they were team of young lads who weren’t foodies themselves. At meal times, they had separate tables of 6-8 where small groups would be mixed with other guests – people would rush down to get their seats which was always interesting to watch! The chalet is right round the corner from one of the lifts which took you up to the Ahorn, a small ski area of 2 reds, a blue and a black. To get to the bigger ski area / main slopes you had to walk in the town for 15-20 minutes in ski kit to reach the main bubble (long queues but they’re upgrading the lift this summer which should make a difference). There was enough room for everyone in the dining and living areas but to be honest I don’t think we’d go back to this chalet as it was a bit too big, with around 30 people staying there.

If the snow is good, you’ll love the challenge of off-pisting it back to your door. Otherwise it’s a short two hundred metre walk from the bottom of the Ahorn Gondola. The Penken Gondola - with access to the main ski area - is just over 10 minutes walk from the chalet, or you can jump on a bus for the latter half of the journey. Spend an evening either in the main village (the Ice Bar is a must), or make use of the onsite bar and relaxation facilities in the chalet.
