Espace Killy ski area Fantastic après ski High altitude skiing

Tignes is somewhere you can ski longer, higher and further than most other resorts in the Alps. Owing its snow-reliability to the Grande Motte glacier, the local ski area is joined with Val d’Isere’s to form the mammoth Espace Killy - intermediates will have a whale of a time here. Choose between 5 different villages, whether your priority is convenience, cosiness or cheap accommodation. Tignes also has one of the most famous New Year parties in the Alps.

Tignes ski resort (pronounce it 'Teens') is one half of the stunning Espace Killy, one of the biggest linked ski areas in France. Because of its high-altitude terrain and access to the Grande Motte glacier, the resort is open both earlier and later in the season than many others and often the lifts are running for short periods of summer skiing. Predominantly purpose built, the resort itself is divided into 5 villages, each different in its own way but all well linked by lifts and bus services. The main area...
With varied pistes at a high altitude, the ski area has impressive powdered terrain for skiers and boarders alike. Beginners can practice on the nursery slopes at Le Lac and Le Lavachet, where you'll find gentle, quiet runs that are accessible via free beginners' lifts. Le Bollin at Val Claret is another conveniently situated green and Grattalu is a lovely wide blue for those wanting to build confidence. Tignes is incredible if you ski at an intermediate level, with miles of powdery blue and red runs includi...
While it's said that those who appreciate Tignes do so for the serious skiing over the après ski, this doesn't do justice to the fact that Tignes' 60+ bars/pubs and 4 night clubs provide some of the best nightlife in the Alps. All villages have their fair share of places to eat and drink, and with a shuttle bus service running 24 hours, you can enjoy your evening without worrying about the journey back. Jam bar is small but with a great atmosphere and Loop bar pretty much offers it all: with live sport, world c...

"Great for our family"

The chalet was fantastic for us. My daughter came from Australia and her kids had never skied before - the chalet is right next to the free lift for beginners which we could see from the window, so we could watch them outside which was really nice. If you weren’t using the beginner lift, you could ski down to something else. It wasn’t what I’d call ski in, ski out because I’d say you’d have to be able to ski into the boot room to do that, but the location definitely worked well for us. The only issue with Le Lac compared to Val Claret is that unless you’re a good skier, you have to get the bubble down because the only route back is a black piste. The food was good and they accommodated the kids well. As for the storage in the rooms, I don’t think I’ve ever been in a chalet that had hooks for your jackets etc.! We had to keep all of our ski stuff just inside the front door, which meant that if gloves fell out of jackets they’d get wet as the boots were on the floor. There were lockers outside but I think they were broken / locked up so we couldn’t use them. I’ve been in much more expensive chalets and on the whole, skiing in France is always pretty basic (unless you’re an Oligarch or filmstar!) – in the realm of French ski chalets I’d give this a 4/5. I’d definitely say it was a great place for families and it would be best booked as one whole group rather than shared, as the social area is quite small.
