Overview: chalet description: Chalet Hotel Mariandre description

NB: This is a "family" chalet, so all bookings must include at least one child or teenager.

The Mariandre continues to attract repeat visits from families year after year mainly due to the excellent location of the hotel within this family-friendly resort, combined with the warmth of hospitality and service of our staff.

Traditionally styled and furnished, the hotel is warm and inviting, and ideally placed for skiing families, with easy slope access, convenient childcare, a choice of family bedrooms and suites, and of course our full Chalet Hotel meals and service.

'Location, location, location!'

The Mariandre is ideally situated for families, being close to the resort's main centre of shops, restaurants and cafés, yet away from the livelier après-ski bars and nightlife. The 'Palais du Sport' is within a short walk, with its indoor and outdoor swimming-pools, and the night-time toboggan-run on the Eclose slope is also close by. For your ultimate convenience, our partner ski-hire shop is literally right next to the hotel front door (see main photo above)

Ski Area Access

The Mariandre is a perfect choice for skiers who hate to walk far, being only 50m from the nearest lift and piste. The Telecentre lift, known locally as the 'Yoghurt Pots', links the centre of the resort up to the Rond Point des Pistes, from where the whole area opens up, with a choice of five different lifts to whisk you on up the mountain. Alternatively, you can start your day on the piste just 50m from home, and ski down from there to the Eclose lift to take you up into the main heart of the area. At the end of the day, you can ski back on piste to the same point, and if conditions permit, just carry on the last 50m across the Tourist Board's terrace to the Mariandre.

Comfortable Hotel Facilities

The spacious lounge/bar area, with its big picture windows, comfy sofas, flatscreen TV (some English channels) and reception desk, form the focal point of the Mariandre. Downstairs, the dining-room is in two parts, and is furnished in simple French bistro-style. A touch on the snug side if everyone arrives at once for breakfast, it is more than comfortable for adult dinners.

The bedrooms and family suites provide a choice of accommodation styles for different family sizes, and all benefit from en suite facilities, flatscreen TV and DVD, with many having a balcony too.

The Nursery and separate sleep-room are off the main lounge, whilst the spacious and attractive Snow Club room, where our Cocoa Club is also held, is conveniently situated within the hotel Typical bedroom style - almost all are large enough to take a cot building.

Ski Childcare & Children’s Ski Lessons

We have led the childcare concept for UK families on skiing holidays for the last 35 years and our programme is constantly reviewed and refined, with previous guest feedback always the key element in further enhancing the experience.

For parents, Classic Childcare means being able to leave your accommodation after breakfast to head for the first lifts, only needing to return after the last one shuts. We look after your children completely throughout the ski day if you wish.

While the babies and toddlers go to our Nursery, staff take the older ones to our partner ski-school, collect them, give them lunch, run activities to keep them happy and stimulated and then take them back to their chalets for their high tea, giving you our super-convenient ‘Seamless Service’ throughout the day.

Why Choose us?

  • 35 years experience as the UK’s leading family ski specialist
  • The biggest choice of childcare services in skiing
  • Flexible childcare options, from half-days up to our 'Seamless Service' from 9am-6pm
  • Strict ratios of nannies to children in all our Nurseries
  • All nannies properly qualified and English-speaking
  • All childcare staff are subject to the new Disclosure and Barring Service Enhanced Check (formerly the 'CRB' check) in line with the UK's legal requirements for anyone working regularly and closely with children.
  • All appropriate childcare and catering staff trained to the City & Guilds Level 2 in Food Safety or equivalent
  • Strict signing-in/out procedures for all ages whenever responsibility for children passes between staff or ski instructors and parents

Meals: Chalet Hotel Mariandre food & drink

Winter 2017/18 Cuisine

We set high standards for our cuisine, and train our staff extensively before the season starts, to ensure that guests will enjoy every meal.

Breakfast

In all our properties breakfast is served buffet-style with a selection of cold options including a choice of cereals or porridge, cold meats, cheese and preserves, and bread (and croissants in France) fruit juices, tea and coffee and a cooked breakfast of bacon, sausage, eggs and beans.

On the one staff night off per week, a breakfast is served as a buffet in our Chalet Hotels.

Piste Picnics

Our Chalet Hotel teams can also prepare a packed lunch for you on request, at a small local charge.

Afternoon Tea

Every day, apart from the one staff day off, a home-baked cake and tea and coffee making facilities are laid out for you to help yourself when you return from the slopes.

In all our Chalet Hotels, we also prepare a homemade soup and a savoury treat to accompany the sweet ones.

Chalet Hotel Meals

High Tea at 5:30pm is served as a 2 course evening meal to all children up to 7 years old (and to 8-12 year olds if preferred). Parents are asked to accompany their children under 3, whilst 3-12 year olds are supervised by our childcare team.

Adult dinner at 7:30pm begins with canapés with a prosecco apéritif, followed by a choice of appetiser, main course and either dessert or local cheese, accompanied by a choice of red, white and rose wine, and culminating with tea or coffee.

Adults (and any children aged 8 and over joining the adults) are asked to choose their starter and main course at breakfast time, and there's always a vegetarian daily option too. Please note that children will be eating the adult menu choices if they choose to eat at 7.30pm.

Dinner on staff day off for all guests

On the staff night(s) off you and your family have the opportunity to eat out in one of the local restaurants. Our staff will be happy to help with recommendations and bookings if you wish. If you would prefer, you can always order in a takeaway pizza, and have a relaxing evening in.

Special Diets

We always prepare a vegetarian main course in our Chalet Hotels and can cater for vegetarians staying in both our Xtra and regular chalets, as well as any other specific dietary requirements in all our properties, if we are advised in advance.

Special diets can be accommodated at a cost of £35 per person per week. Please notify us of your dietary needs at the time of booking.

Children’s High Tea

High Tea provides children under 13 with a healthy menu, but tailored more towards children’s tastes than our main adult dinner, and puréed food is also always available for infants on request. Parents are asked to accompany their children under 36 months at High Tea please, whilst children from 3-12 years will be supervised by staff.

Winter 2018/19 Cuisine

Our staff prepare and serve breakfast, afternoon tea and a 3 course evening meal including wine and coffee, on five days a week, representing great value for money in any ski resort and giving you more precious time as a family. The staff nights off give you a chance to sample some of the delicious local restaurants an ensure that you don’t leave The Alps without your fill of Weiner Schnitzel or Fondue! Our baby listening service ensures that you can enjoy your meal out without worry.

We set high standards for our cuisine, and train our staff extensively before the season starts, to ensure that you will enjoy every meal.

Breakfast

In all our properties breakfast is served buffet-style with a selection of cold options including a choice of cereals or porridge, cold meats, cheese and preserves, and bread (an croissants in France) fruit juices, tea and coffee and a cooked breakfast of bacon, sausage, eggs and beans.

On the two staff nights off per week, a breakfast is served as a buffet in our Chalet Hotels.

Piste Picnics

Our Chalet Hotel teams can also prepare a packed lunch for you on request, at a small local charge.

Afternoon Tea

Every day, apart from two one staff days off, a home-baked cake and tea and coffee making facilities are laid out for you to help yourself when you return from the slopes.

We also prepare a homemade soup and a savoury treat to accompany the sweet ones.

Christmas & New Year Celebrations

All our chalets and Chalet Hotels offer traditional fare for Christmas dinner, with roast turkey and all the trimmings, Christmas pudding, mince pies, crackers, party hats and of course a pre-dinner glass of Champagne plus a lively, fun atmosphere for all the family.

This is the one meal that all families share together regardless of children’s ages, so in some properties the dining tables can be quite crowded, but this adds to the festive ambience of all celebrating together!

A special festive menu followed by Champagne is also served on New Year’s Eve, but this is for adults only (and those aged 13+ of course), unless you are staying in a Family Dining chalet.

Staff Day/Night Off

Once a week for 2017/18 and twice a week for 2018/19, you have an opportunity to eat out and enjoy a local Alpine Restaurant on our staff's day(s) off. Don't forget, you can still take advantage of our free Baby-Listening/Child Patrol Service on this evening. For the 2017/18 season.

We update Chalet Hotel Mariandre's details often, but facilities do change. e.g. some extras listed by the supplier as "free" or included might only be for the first time you use them, or for one time per party, then charged for further use. If any specific feature is essential to your holiday, make sure you ask us to confirm the details of it before you book your holiday.

With a transfer time of around 2 hours, Alpe d'Huez is very accessible from Grenoble or Chambery airport. Established in 1936, it was the first resort in France to be installed with a fully operational ski lift. The resort lies in the Grandes Rousses Massif domain. It is partnered by the smaller mountain villages of Auris-en-Oisans, Villard Reculas, Oz-en-Oisans, Vaujany and La Garde, all of which are connected by a free transport system. The slopes are mainly south facing and as a result the area, known as "...
Alpe d’Huez has had sun and snow galore since 1936, and with the culmination of around 20 Million Euros of improvements due to come to fruition for 2021, there is a huge ski area to be explored. With a whopping 52km of greens, this is an excellent place for beginners. The easiest skiing is above the village and Les Bergers. There are plenty of wide-open runs underneath the DMC gondola, many being ‘beginners only’ so you can learn without too much traffic. If you’re feeling confident, try some of the bl...

L’igloo is the place to go if you want to party late into the night. Alpe d’Huez has all of the usual culinary delights you’d expect in the mountains. To sample some traditional French food, ...

"Fantastic week Jan/Feb 2016"

We had a fantastic week. The chalet hotel is all very nice, clean and tidy and the staff were really good. The only downside was the amount of kids there, but we only booked it 48 hours before going! The accommodation was very central, close to the lifts and really good. Meals were a bit of a mix, with mains like duck and venison – always really tasty and plenty to eat. Our bedroom was nice, the only thing I would say is that it would have been nice to have some kind of furniture on our balcony as we had some really hot sunny days!

I visited this property in 2015 and it has a great location in the Old Town of Alpe d'Huez. You only have to turn left from the chalet hotel, go up a small flight of stairs and walk 50m to the bucket lift. This quirky lift has four linked baskets that you stand up in and it takes you directly to the ski school meeting points and a large selection of lifts/the main gondolas. The chalet hotel rooms have recently been refurbished and there's a selection of interconnecting suites or adjacent rooms to choose from. The interconnecting rooms are very popular, so you need to book early for these! The in house crèche and snowclub are great, welcoming and decorated in bright colours with tonnes of toys to entertain. The lounge and bar are comfortable and the food we sampled was excellent, with a variety of options. The chalet hotel has a lovely feel to it also - it's large enough to offer a sociable atmosphere but it doesn't feel too overrun or hectic.
