With a transfer time of around 2 hours, Alpe d'Huez is very accessible from Grenoble or Chambery airport. Established in 1936, it was the first resort in France to be installed with a fully operational ski lift. The resort lies in the Grandes Rousses Massif domain. It is partnered by the smaller mountain villages of Auris-en-Oisans, Villard Reculas, Oz-en-Oisans, Vaujany and La Garde, all of which are connected by a free transport system. The slopes are mainly south facing and as a result the area, known as "...
Alpe d’Huez has had sun and snow galore since 1936, and with the culmination of around 20 Million Euros of improvements due to come to fruition for 2021, there is a huge ski area to be explored. With a whopping 52km of greens, this is an excellent place for beginners. The easiest skiing is above the village and Les Bergers. There are plenty of wide-open runs underneath the DMC gondola, many being ‘beginners only’ so you can learn without too much traffic. If you’re feeling confident, try some of the bl...
If you like live music, try the Underground in Vieil Alpe. It combines a pleasant atmosphere with bands playing most nights. Smithy’s has drinks promotions and healthy portions of Tex-Mex food to match. If you can’t bear to miss an important game whilst in France, O’Sharkey’s is the best spot to watch live sports. L’igloo is the place to go if you want to party late into the night. Alpe d’Huez has all of the usual culinary delights you’d expect in the mountains. To sample some traditional French food, ...

"Chef called out for thanks at end of week - great staff"

Mr Li, Borehamwood
5/ out of 5
Les Cimes is one of the best I’ve been to – it’s fantastic. It’s an ex-hotel and it’s what you expect, a very good, general purpose property. The chalet staff were very good, very helpful and all friendly. The food is good, you get a choice in the morning and evening so you can pick what you want and you have the usual red and white wine to accompany the food. One of the other guests called the chef out at the end of the week so everyone could thank him; he was very shy but deserved the thanks. On the chalet night out we ate at Le Genepi which is really good - we’d eaten there before and would again. It has excellent accessibility, other than the fact that the 2 man chair lift (which it should take about 1 minute to ski down to) was closed all week when we were here because of conditions. We had to walk 5 minutes or so to the bottom station to the yoghurt pot lift in the village which is very slow and old; overall the journey took about 25 minutes more than it would have if the chair lift was running. We did manage to ski back at the end of the day to a point literally 5 minutes walk to the hotel, so it was only the journey out that took a while. The route to ski back is easy, anyone could do it. It’s pretty flat at points and you have to push and walk a bit but it is quite straight forward. The ensuite room we stayed in was clean, not spotlessly clean but we didn’t expect it to be so this wasn’t a problem.

"A really, really good chalet hotel"

There weren’t any English channels on the TV but this is a small thing. It’s a hotel that suits everyone across the board – families, groups. It’s not luxury but its great value. We paid a phenomenally good price.

Apart from the location being fine (you just had to walk down to the slopes), everything else was awful, absolutely terrible. The food was disgusting. We booked the hotel thinking we’d be on our own and hadn’t realized we had to mix and match with other guests at dinner times. It wasn’t a problem for me as much but some guests just didn’t want to meet other people. The bathroom/toilet doors didn’t close (not just ours, other people complained too). The whole place was just shabby and horrible. We had a terrible problem with the ESF instructor who was really horrible to my daughter. I wouldn’t recommend it!
