Austria Holidays

Summer holidays in Austria

If you think Austria’s a feast for the eyes when it’s snowing, you should see it in the summer. As a country that’s mostly mountainous, it has everything from high alpine peaks to deep valley lakes, with rolling meadows and thick forests in between. In full flowery bloom at summertime, chocolate-box villages, lakeside towns and historic cities all form fantastic bases for the unending list of things to see and do.

Cycling & mountain biking holidays

Whether your weapon of choice is mountain bike, road bike or E-bike, this is an awesome country to explore on two wheels; the Austrian Alps are a particular sweet-spot of rugged, high-altitude trails and panoramic mountain roadways. Around the lakes, you’ll find some gentle stretches between attractive towns and gorgeous natural beaches. Hardcore pedal-pushers will love clocking up the miles on the extensive Tauern, Pinzgaun and Salzkammergut bike circuses, while Saalbach’s Freeride Park is a dream to session. E-bikes make some of the uphill climbs a doddle, letting you enjoy the terrain even if you’re not quite Bradley Wiggins - they’re available to hire in most resorts including Mayrhofen, Kitzbühel and Ischgl.

Some of the world’s most challenging hikes can be found on summit tours like the Stubai High path, and the Alderweg/Eagle route is a mighty passage of the Alps between St Johann and St Anton. Following marked trails around lakes, waterfalls and reservoirs, even the most inexperienced mountaineers can get up close to Austria’s stunning natural features. If you’re new to the area, most tourist offices do guided tours and sell mapped-out routes. With many a Gasthof or dairy farm along the way, there’s every opportunity to rest your feet, refuel and get a load of that view…
