\nEveryone’s favourite calorific beverage, a good hot chocolate, is so many things:\u00a0 welcome warmth\u00a0on a cold\u00a0a day on the mountain,\u00a0the best\u00a0bribe for well-behaved skiing sprogs or,\u00a0injected with a daring dash of Chartreuse, a spot of Dutch courage for that notorious black run.
\n<\/span>There\u2019s no hot chocolate like a ski holiday<\/i> hot chocolate,\u00a0so we\u2019ve\u00a0gathered\u00a012 of our personal favourites to mark the day \u2013\u00a0prepare to drool\u00a0over this delicious dozen:<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Mooserwirt, St Anton<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Selling more beer than anywhere else in the Alps, the Mooserwirt\u2019s known as the place for getting utterly <\/span>cabbaged, while rubbing elbows with 500 of your new best friends.\u00a0 Though they\u2019re served with a little more finesse than the stonking great steins, the hot chocolates here don\u2019t let the side down \u2013 laced with lethal Stroh rum, the 80% alcohol \u201cspirit of Austria\u201d.\u00a0 Fortunately the Moose is almost at the bottom of the slopes, so there’s nothing challenging after drinks, beyond staying upright.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Crazy Daisy’s, Zell Am See<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

More Austrian Stroh over at Crazy Daisy\u2019s in Zell, served with cream and a big smile out on the bustling apr\u00e8s terrace.\u00a0 Their Hot Choc guru Aaron wouldn’t give us his secret recipe, but he assured us that he gives every variety a ‘quality control test’ to make sure it’s good enough… Other additives include Baileys and Amaretto \u2013 we recommend one of each, before attempting their other house specialty \u2013\u00a0the graphically named\u00a0\u201cyellow snow\u201d is\u00a0a cocktail\u00a0served in what closely resembles a specimen cup\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Grand Marnier Creperie, Meribel<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

This place is famed for putting the Grand M in anything they can get their hands on, including, bien s\u00fbr, our favourite chocolate tipple. \u00a0Chase yours down with Grand M crepes, doused in as much of the liquor as you can handle\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

Bobby’s Bar, Borovets<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

For\u00a0hot choc\u00a0that makes\u00a0you feel you\u2019ve “come home from the cold”, Bobby\u2019s bar has the liquid homecoming for you, served right by the fire and with a welcome so warm, from\u00a0Bobby and Kas, that you\u2019ll feel like you\u2019re one of their family.\u00a0 Better still, the kid\u2019s playroom’s free in the evenings, so kids can\u00a0play while you sit and\u00a0sip.\u00a0 Choose if you can between Baileys, Brandy, Savoy Whisky, Jack Daniels, Tia Maria, Savoy dark rum and Captain Morgan’s spiced rum.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Little Nell, Aspen<\/a><\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n

Little in name, but not in scrumptiousness, the Little Nell<\/a>\u2019s hot chocolate is prepared with whole milk, full cream and Valrhona Ganache; and topped with whipped cream and home-made marshmallows.\u00a0 At $12, the delicious calories don\u2019t come cheap, but they’re worth every cent, especially if\u00a0add a liquor to the mix. \u00a0The favourites: Kahlua and Peppermint Schnapps.<\/span><\/p>\n

The word on Banff Avenue is that Evelyn\u2019s Bar serves THE best hot choc in town \u2013 no small claim in a nation known for its voraciously sweet tooth.\u00a0 Served with\u00a0CHOCOLATE whipped cream, pair yours with their double choc cake and make sure to\u00a0book the afternoon off – you’ll be spending it in raptures.<\/span><\/p>\n

Even if it were of\u00a0the powder and hot water variety (it\u2019s not), the hot chocolate at Three S!xty would be legendary enough\u00a0for those gob-smackingly gorgeous views.\u00a0 At a sky-scraping 3500m, it’s\u00a0the highest revolving restaurant on earth. The only trouble is, you have to make the drink last an hour or invest in some more drinks and cake to enjoy the full\u00a0360 rotation – life\u2019s hard<\/em> in Saas Fee…

Something of an institution in\u00a0glamorous St Moritz, this place has been perfecting their sweet treats ever since Fritz Hanselmann opened shop in 1894. \u00a0The hot chocolate honestly\u00a0can\u2019t be ordered\u00a0without a slice of their Engadine nut torte – so good people have it shipped all over the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Most pop in here\u00a0to pick up\u00a0the essential Matterhorn-shaped Swiss chocolate souvenir, but you won\u2019t regret sparing 20 minutes for a hot chocolate from the extensive list and a piece of Madame Taugwalder\u2019s flourless chocolate cake.\u00a0 Like those who have\u00a0been wise enough to do\u00a0so\u00a0before you, you\u2019ll be back before long.<\/span><\/p>\n

We always set our Corso<\/em> for this caf\u00e9 when we\u2019re skiing Val Gardena \u2013 the Senoner family have a fabulous range of hot chocolate drinks (and also do a cracking chocolate fondue, if you\u2019re cravings need further sating).<\/span><\/p>\n

Famed for\u00a0dolce far niente<\/em>, the Italians also brew the sweetest hot chocolates, so thick they\u2019d hold a hobnob upright. Speaking of\u00a0– they also make a mean biscuit, like these homemade\u00a0confections from the L\u2019Aiglon \u2013 used to scoop each of their whopping\u00a032 types of cioccolata calda into watering mouths.<\/span><\/p>\n

This isn’t just<\/em> a hot chocolate, this is Jason Harrison\u2019s<\/em> Haut Chocolat<\/em> \u2013 arriving on silver tray, gently churned in front of you and slowly poured into a cup of marshmallows (chocolate flavoured and homemade, of course) through a luxurious dark chocolate lattice. Watch everything deliciously melt together, and if your taste buds are tingling for more cream or chocolate shavings, don\u2019t fight them.<\/span><\/p>\n

In case, like us,\u00a0you\u2019re\u00a0well and truly drooling by now\u00a0\u2013<\/strong> we asked our friend and renowned Artisan Chocolatier, David Pasquiet for his “secret” hot chocolate\u00a0recipe.\u00a0Running L’Instant Chocolat in Crans Montana with his lovely wife, Virginie, and voted Swiss Chocolatier of the year 2013, he knows how to tickle the taste buds.<\/span><\/p>\n

Simple but spectacular:<\/em><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

Heat 100ml of milk, 100ml of water and 2 soup spoons (40 g) of grated chocolate, and let the mixture slowly come to the boil.<\/span><\/p>\n

Add cornflour for a thicker consistency, as well as any spices as you like – cinnamon, pepper, chilli etc\u2026 or enjoy au naturale<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n
