Seychelles Easter holidays

Easter celebrations in Seychelles are embraced with Catholic influences and a ton of joyous family time!

On Palm Sunday, churches give out palm leaves to replicate the entrance of Jesus into Jerusalem, where the crowds laid them on the ground for Him to walk on and waved them as they lined the route. It is tradition to shape the leaves into crosses to decorate and bless homes. On Good Friday, crosses are placed alongside the road to lead locals to the famous Alto Vista Chapel (just outside the town of Noord) and prepare for the annual Caminda di Cruz, (The Path of the Cross). If you want to get stuck in, its notable start times can vary depending on which order of worship is in charge; some begin as early as 4.00 AM on Good Friday, great for the insomniacs amongst us.

Easter traditions in Seychelles

The main religion in the Seychelles is Catholic, reflected in many of the traditions the locals participate in during Easter. Lent, known locally as ‘cuaresma’, is one of the oldest traditions in Seychelles; it involves varying degrees of fasting. Some people will refrain from eating food for a whole day, while others won’t eat until 3 pm. This lasts for the whole of Lent; 40 days. Eating fish on Wednesdays and Fridays is the most frequently practiced aspect of Lent and many restaurants increase their seafood options during this time. What’s even more special than Lent in the Seychelles during Easter is ‘beach camping’. Beach camping, known locally as ‘Campamento’, has been a vital part of the Easter tradition for many decades. Family members gather together and set up their tents along a number of beaches for a weeklong holiday. During Campamento, many activities, such as volleyball, beach tennis and even live bands are experienced by all.

Best hotels to celebrate Easter in Seychelles

If you're after an Easter with your family that none of you will forget, Club Med Seychelles and Constance Lemuria are ideal places to celebrate. Egg hunts, live music, art exhibitions at Semaine de la Francophonie, and delicious feasts are only a small selection of what the Easter period features in those sensational hotels.

Another idyllic hotel for easter celebrations is the all-inclusive hotel, Riu Palace. With organised egg hunts and opportunities to meet the easter bunny himself, the kids are destined to have an Easter to remember for a lifetime.
