A very snowy Chamonix

Reviewed 3 Jun 2016

A snowy week in Chamonix with only two clear days, but conditions were generally good and we had a good time. Hadn’t been before this visit, but it’s great. The town centre is dead good. You have to get buses to every mountain but we didn’t mind that as we wanted to explore. The area has everything you wanted, the off piste suited me down to the ground! We got taken down the Vallee Blanche with a guide which was quite hairy – you walk along a 2 foot ledge, strap your board on and then you’re off down the valley. I’d definitely go back, because the visibility was low it would be good to see it in better weather!

Make the most of the ski pass!

Reviewed 17 May 2016

The ski pass isn’t just for the ski lifts and we made full use of the other activities available – going up to the glacier on the train, doing the Step into the Void (quite touristy and a lot of queuing but good fun). We went to the Christmas market which was on that week. We also did ice skating which is included in the pass, and tried the luge which was fun. I don’t know if many people appreciate that you can do a lot more than skiing – we still skied every day, just if we had a couple of hours free in the afternoons we’d have a go at something else.
The snow quality wasn’t great over Christmas but as we’re beginner-intermediate level it didn’t really bother us apart from a day or two when it was icy. You can’t control the weather!
We were quite happy to do all sorts and Chamonix has a bit more opportunity to do more. It fit well into our plans.

For serious skiers!

Reviewed 3 May 2016

My first time skiing in Chamonix, I’ve been previously in the summer. I think it’s a challenging resort, for people who are committed and keen rather than those just wanting a jolly holiday. There was a fair bit going on in the town, they were hosting some sort of event when we got there which seemed to have been organised by Audi – lots of cars and signs around – and they had an open air stage with a band playing. We ate out one night and enjoyed it.

Good intermediate resort

Reviewed 20 Apr 2016

Chamonix is certainly good for intermediates, if you’re really good you might get bored as there are not many challenging black runs. As intermediate skiers, we were able to ski a different area every day so there was lots of variety and we weren’t stuck on the same few slopes day in day out. If you have your own transport when you’re staying here it’s great, as the buses can get a bit crushed. There are some really good bars, we went to a couple to watch the 6 nations but because we had a chalet holiday, we spent most of the evenings relaxing and chatting in the chalet.

Ideal for a combination of skiing and holidaying

Reviewed 1 Jul 2015

Chamonix is a nice resort, it’s not ski in, ski out like a lot of French resorts, but it has a good buzz about it. The weather wasn’t ideal, with the lifts all closed at some points in the week. Chamonix is ideal for a combination of skiing and holidaying though, and we went to a little museum and tried a few restaurants. There’s also a cinema, but it’s all in French so we didn’t go. It depends what you want from a ski resort, if you’re mad keen skiers or snowboarders it might not be for you, but if you don’t have to be the first on the lift every morning and want to do more than ski, it’s ideal. My best advice would be to try and visit all of the different ski areas, which you can easily do if you plan ahead.

Children's 1st ski holiday

Reviewed 22 Jun 2015

Really liked Chamonix, all the restaurants were very friendly and we had a fantastic meal at a beautiful one half way down the town.
Being April it got a bit slushy by lunchtime, but as the two children had never been skiing before, it worked well for us to finish at lunch anyway. I wouldn’t say it was a great resort for first time kids, we left it quite late and it was just a case of getting on and booking something. There are definitely some easier beginner resorts out there but having said that the kids still had a great week.

Nice resort but getting to the slopes is a hassle

Reviewed 16 Jun 2015

I liked the resort on the whole. It’s an age old problem but the fact that the ski areas aren’t connected is a bit annoying. You have to get buses here there and everywhere – people who love Chamonix would say it was a minor inconvenience because the skiing is so good, but I don’t think it’s a great deal better than other places I’ve skied.
I spent a week in Val d’Isere earlier in the year, where within 20 minutes of leaving your chalet you can be in any of the ski areas - in Chamonix you might still be sitting on a bus.

A great week in Chamonix

Reviewed 17 Apr 2015

Chamonix is a lovely place – the only downside is that you can’t ski to the door there. The skiing was really good, the area has something for everyone. The weather was a little bit iffy and they closed the lifts on a couple of days, but the good thing about Chamonix is that there are a lot of other things to do besides skiing (whereas in a lot of ski to the door resorts, you just have skiing). We enjoyed trying a new bar every night. The coach journey from Geneva airport is nice and short, taking about 40 minutes.

Chamonix January 15

Reviewed 9 Apr 2015

Chamonix suffered with a snow draught on the week we were there but we enjoyed skiing here and would go back, it would be much better with better conditions! If you’re a confident skier, definitely go off piste. We hadn’t realised that you need to use the bus to access the different ski areas, it wasn’t a great problem but it’s good to know these things in advance.

Great resort

Reviewed 10 Jun 2014

The only thing that would make Chamonix better is if you could ski from the accommodation– it took half an hour to forty five minutes on the bus from my hotel door to the pistes. Otherwise it’s great, there was a lot of snow and the area is massive with hundreds of runs and a lot of variety (although you’d enjoy it more if you’d been skiing a couple of times before). The nightlife is really good – Chambre 9 is good for après ski.

Really good snow in February

Reviewed 3 Jun 2014

The skiing in Chamonix is really good. Were intermediates and it suited us. We had really good snow while we were there (end Feb). There’s good après ski in Chamonix, we went to a place called ‘Monte’ I think which had nice views. There were a few other nice bars in the centre of town.

Not much snow late March 2014

Reviewed 2 Jun 2014

I hadn’t been to Chamonix before. There wasn’t a lot of snow at the time of year we went (late March). It was OK for what we wanted. There are 4-5 main ski areas around Chamonix and you can easily end up skiing the same slopes at each one. So really you need to take the bus to a different one each day. The area which is nearest to the centre of Chamonix (you still need to take the lift up to get to it) was good and had big, wide pistes. I would recommend the resort for beginners and intermediates.

Great variety of après ski

Reviewed 2 Jun 2014

It was my first time skiing in Chamonix. It had the best après of anywhere I’ve ever been! It’s a very good resort for big groups. There’s a really nice range of bars, there’s plenty of variety, and it’s lively. We met lots of other young groups including stag parties. We were mainly intermediates and the ski area was brilliant for us. It was a shame we had bad weather but we still made the most of it. We tried out all the different areas and took the bus to the further ones. Only a few of our group went to Grand Montent, we were warned it’s more of an area for advanced skiers. We went to the Brevent area quite a lot as the bus stopped outside our hotel.

The Aiguille du Midi cable car is a must

Reviewed 21 May 2014

I hadn’t skied Chamonix before but really liked it. I’m not a big skier so was doing more learning but it was very nice for the time we were here. My partner is a good skier and has a friend who lived there who was our own personal guide for the week – they did lots of off piste which he really enjoyed.
I don't know if Chamonix would be ideal with children as there’s so much transport between the accommodation, which is on the valley floor and the actual slopes, so if you had kids they would have to be ok with carrying all their stuff with them a lot.
There are lots of really nice restaurants about the place with a good variety – it’s quite a busy place so if there’s somewhere highly recommended that you want to eat you definitely need to book it in advance. The town itself is quite small so after walking around once or twice you get your bearings.
The big Aiguille du Midi cable car in the middle runs all the time and takes you up to 4000m and is a definite must, the views are amazing! Wrap up warm as it’s -30 at the top! There are two kinds of ski pass here, a full pass and a smaller one and the full one covers that cable car. The smaller one is more restricted and I would definitely say to get the full one – we went to Courmayeur in Italy through the tunnel one day and that’s all included in the pass. It was nice to have a change of scenery – I was surprised how different it was! Courmayeur is really pretty. It had only snowed one night in Chamonix but in Italy they had sunshine and it was snowing.

Grands Montets is the best - I love it!

Reviewed 3 Apr 2014

We’ve managed to ski all of Chamonix apart from the Vallee Blanche – we did sign up for it last time we were here but it wasn’t safe because of avalanche risk.
We’ve skied here two January’s running and 2013 was much colder at around -13 degrees. Whichever resort you pick to ski in, there are bars or restaurants in the main meeting area where you can go to dry off and warm up. Les Praz has a separate eating area where you are allowed to bring your own lunch which is nice.
Grand Montets skiing wise is the best, I love it, there’s loads of off piste and even though you feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere you just ski to the left and you’re back in civilisation! I took an off piste clinic with Evolution 2 last time I was in Chamonix and this really helped. Chamonix is definitely good for less experienced skiers too; Brevent has ski slopes that are perfect for kids and beginners. Les Houches is really lovely; it’s hidden between the trees whereas all the other resorts are really open, so when the wind starts blowing and you need somewhere to hide it’s great.
We tend to use wherever we find on the slopes for a hot chocolate and dip in and out of bars until we find a good one, but Bar Barberousse in Chamonix is really good and not many people know about it so it’s usually quiet.

Really romantic for couples, great for families & beginners

Reviewed 7 Mar 2014

Skied here with my boyfriend and would definitely recommend Chamonix to couples, it’s really romantic with a lovely village.
It would probably be good for families too, great runs for beginners with easy access and loads more advanced stuff if you need it.
Not many parks either so really good for traditional skiers.
There was lots of snow when we were here but it was really foggy (end of March) which restricted the skiing big time, they pretty much shut the mountain for three days so there was really limited skiing! We went around the bars in Chamonix village and also spent a lot of time in the bar in the hotel which was really cosy.
