Bit dated but great food and position

Reviewed 9 Jun 2016

It was quite good. The building is a bit dated and could use some refurbishment, but the staff were great and the food was really good. The people there were amazing and I really enjoyed it. The location is extremely convenient, very close to the ski slopes and lifts. The only problem if I remember it right is that on the second or third day half of the hotel couldn’t get out of their rooms because of food poisoning, but it didn’t affect my week too much.

Basic, but really good

Reviewed 9 Jun 2016

The staff and service at the Moris were all really good. The food provided was also really good. The rooms were basic but that’s what we’d expected. Obviously the bar downstairs is quite loud, but we were never in early enough for it to bother us. The location’s fine, really close to the ski lifts and close enough to the ski hire place we used. It’s about five minutes from the bars too, so it was a pretty good place to be.

Great for busy, active ski holidays

Reviewed 8 Jun 2016

The staff were very enthusiastic and good fun. The food was just what you want for a ski holiday- basic but plenty of it and they kept it coming. The accommodation itself is tired and it struck me that the place could do with a makeover at the very least. It was all pretty tired – carpets, curtains, walls. The location is perfect as you can walk to the slopes. It’s also on top of one of the best bars in the resort – I took my teenage children with me and couldn’t complain about the noise because most of the time they were making it! My room was the furthest away which was good. If you want a quiet and peaceful holiday don’t stay here, but if you want a busy, active holiday it’s great.

Not posh but it has absolutely everything you need.

Reviewed 26 May 2016

The Chalet Hotel is basic but it’s warm and dry and has all the amenities you need. It can get pretty noisy, but you read that on the website so you know what you’re in for and that’s fine.

The location is brilliant, a 5 minute walk (for the slowest walker) to the slopes. You just cross the street, turn left, take a right and walk to the end of the street.

Great for lively people and single travellers

Reviewed 30 Dec 2015

I went to the Morris Hotel in Dec 2015 and had a great and unique experience. Firstly the staff are amazing!! They are always friendly and very helpful. The hotel itself looks a bit outdated at first, but as I got talking to the other guests (some that have been going there for ages), I realised that it definitely adds to the atmosphere! As a lot of people know, the famous Morris pub is on the bottom floor, which is always great for après and also just general evening partying (every evening!). It’s a case of “if you can’t beat them, join them!” and every evening is packed full of fun times meeting new people. If you take a night off, you can get yourself complimentary ear plugs if needed to help you get some shut eye. As a single traveller in particular, this is certainly a great place to stay in Val d’Isere!

Brilliant for single skiers

Reviewed 24 Apr 2015

As a single, the Moris is an extremely good venue and I’m already planning to go back. I met people who I could ski with for the week which worked really well. The Moris is right in the heart of Val so it’s literally a 3-4 minute walk to the lifts. It would definitely be a bit of a loss for Val d’Isere if it ever gets closed up as it’s such a unique venue. As for the actual chalet hotel, I liked it – but I’m a fairly relaxed person and others would probably find it different as in terms of facilities it’s fairly primitive (which is why I could only give it a 3/5). The rooms are fairly rudimentary and they suited me fine but if, for example, my wife was there she’d prefer an en-suite to just a washbasin. They mentioned I might need earplugs for the music but I wasn’t ever disturbed by it! The food was good, no problems there.

Great location, brilliant staff but accommodation needs to be overhauled

Reviewed 1 Apr 2015

We had a really good New Year in Val d’Isere but honestly the Moris is a bit poor, the facilities are probably the same as they’ve been for the past 15 years and it was all looking a bit tired – although this isn’t anything that people don’t know about the Moris already.
They have separate toilets and bathing facilities which isn’t something you’d expect to find in a modern chalet, then there was old furniture and lights that weren’t working – all little things and nothing major but they add up and the whole place could definitely do with a refit.
The food was fine, it was all basic fare and never anything too ‘a la carte’ but we weren’t expecting much so it wasn’t an issue. The chef was really good if anyone had dietary requirements or didn’t fancy what was on the menu, he’d rustle something else up without a problem. They made a special effort on New Year’s Eve with a six course dinner as opposed to the normal three courses.
The location is probably the best thing about the Moris, it’s nice and central with only a short walk to the main lifts.
The staff were brilliant, James the head chalet guy was very good. They were all fairly young gap year / uni grads but all very accommodating.
One thing worth mentioning is that the noise levels are quite high as the Moris Pub is on the basement part of the building. It usually stays open until about 2 in the morning, with live music or a DJ – if you’re joining in it’s fine (we didn’t have a problem as we didn't have any children with us) but if you wanted to get an early night it would be difficult.

My first ski holiday in 12 years and I really can’t wait to go back next year

Reviewed 23 May 2014

It was amazing! I loved it. The food was absolutely fabulous, like 5 star hotel standard! The drinks at dinner were included as well (it was easy to lose track of how much you drank…). The staff were amazing. It was awesome. You are roughing it a bit if you stay here, well a bit to my standards. The bedding, etc, isn’t high quality. It didn’t matter though, it wasn’t about that. It's something you need to be aware of though, besides the fact that everyone eats together at dinner.

It was my first ski holiday in 12 years and I went on my own. I met such nice people! We spent the whole holiday together, skiing together and spending the evenings together. From the first day we were crying with laughter we got on so well.
There were such characters there, I think that group of people wouldn’t normally go well together, but we all had something in common (skiing) so it worked really well. Everybody got on.
There was a 72 year old professional skier and he basically became our leader. The other guests were very kind as well, I was out of practise and they waited for me and helped me learn to ski again. We all met up around resort every day.
I shared a room with a young 23 year old lad who was also a pro, it was great to ski with him. People go back there for the same week every year and see the same people – we’ve all said we will meet up again next year for the same week. I can’t wait to go back. I want to go every year for the rest of my life, it’s what I’m looking forward to and saving up for!
The pub underneath the Moris is the centre of nightlife in Val d’Isere, it’s the best place to go out. The hotel is a few minutes’ walk from the lift, but if you end up skiing down to the further part of the resort at the end of the day then you can just take the free shuttle bus back to the hotel.
I got a great deal with a free lift pass by booking last minute. I will be booking for next year but I’ll do it last minute again. I highly recommend the Moris!

Favourite place in the Alps for singles ski holidays

Reviewed 8 Dec 2013

My favourite place to stay in the alps when on a solo ski holiday! This place is great for skiing when your friends can't make it, and for making new friends both on the slopes and over breakfast and supper. As "Matthew" wrote in his review, the building itself is pretty worn out, but that's the real secret of this diamond in the rough, because its the reason mere mortals like me can afford to ski and stay in the very heart of the world's greatest ski resort. The chalet hotel Morris is hands down the best value if you want to get the most from a stay in the Espace Killy. At Sno we're very clear about telling our clients its pretty tired inside, because occasionally people will not realise that here your holiday money is getting you a top location and the most wonderful service, not a fancy refurb'. I want to give this place a 5 out of 5 snowflakes, but I'll give it an overall 4 in the interests of making sure you realise its 5 points for staff, location, food, cleanliness and value, but probably only 2 or 3 for the building/rooms.
Top Tips:
- If you're a light sleeper, request a high room, as the public bar is a famously fun place with live music.
- This is essentially an "adult" chalet hotel, so you may not be able to book with children unless they are older teenagers.
Overall I can't recommend it enough.

Service, hearty food, unbeatable location - ignore the knackered building

Reviewed 12 Jan 2013

I'm just writing in to say what an awesome time we had in Val d'Isere and thanks for recommending it to us. Its amazing to find somewhere as basic as the Moris in such a totally central location - I don't think there's anywhere this central that isn't posh/expensive in the rest of town. Don't expect regular VDI boutique-chic from the Moris though, some people feel its more 2 star than 3 because its a pretty well worn old girl. I love the place because of that - character and a brilliantly friendly atmosphere - here you're paying for wonderful service, hearty food and an unbeatable location, rather than décor, as its quite rough around the edges (the place was full of real ski/board/snow lovers too - great for single travellers as you can room-share to avoid single supplements, and you can sit on a different dinner table every night if you want, and ski together in groups - magic!).
Val is not known as a great spot to ski on the cheap but def' one of the very best. Thanks a million to manageress Gilly and her terrific team... and thanks also to local live rock legends Mullet, who played in the Moris public bar downstairs to raucous appreciation. Val d'Isere remains one of and perhaps "the" world's best, in the Moris is my favourite place to stay!
