Yllas Ski Holiday Facts
Established in ? the Finnish ski resort Yllas lies at 255 metres altitude in the Lapland region of the Finnish ?. With the highest lifts and ski slopes at 718m Yllas ski area is not snow sure. Over 7 snow cannons ensure artificial Yllas snow making covers 8km of ski trails, which equates to around 10 of the ski slopes. The nearest airport transfer to Yllas (Finland) is Kittila at a distance of 45km or approximately ? minutes driving time. Yllas ski season runs from October to May.

Pronounced 'U-las', this is the largest downhill and cross-country ski centre in Finland with the greatest uplift per hour. The resort also boasts the country's greatest vertical, most runs and longest run ( 3km ). Many of the higher slopes are above the tree-line, which is unusual for Finnish skiing. The slopes are 4km from the resort, although you can nearly ski all the way back and in any case there is a free ski bus link. The sun does not rise in winter until late January, when temperatures can be as low as -15ºC although there is adequate daylight, Children get free rental equipment and lift tickets so long as they wear a helmet when skiing.

Besides skiing and boarding, Ylläs offers a wide variety of alternative outdoor and indoor activities. These include snowmobile safaris, reindeer- and husky safaris, snowshoe and kick sleigh excursions as well as Winter Olympics and ice-fishing.
Reindeer safaris are particularly worthwhile and are usually offered as mini safaris over 2km or longer excursions over 6km. Some of these activities are offered in the Lapp Village which opened for the 2004-5 season and offers lappish food, dog sledding, snowmobiling and reindeer safaris.
Indoor sports vary from climbing walls and gyms to mini spas and the Äkäslompolo indoor sports hall (with badminton, basketball and floorball). You can alo take a trip to visit Santa's Secret Home in the woods.
The arts and handicrafts gallery Lumiperhonen (snow butterfly) features a wide range of art works from more than thirty of Lapland's artists and artisans.
Medical facilities, postal services and other needed services are within easy reach either in the villages or in Kolari. There is no ATM in the villages so visitors should have either cash money or bank- or credit card.

- In the coldest winter months of January and February you need a ski resort with some sunny south facing ski slopes, so your days on the snow doesn't feel like a polar expedition. Conversely, in the warmest spring skiing months of March and especially April, a ski resort with some cool and shady north facing slopes will ensure you're not skiing on slush, but benefitting from best late season snow.
