A world-class but unpretentious resort offering excellent skiing for all abilities. Excels in kid's programs and disabled skiing as well as all other more usual skiers needs. It may be reached from Denver by a unique (in Western US) ski train. In 1997 - '98 Winter Park introduced the Vasquez Cirque terrain of 435 off-piste acres with a mix of steeps, glades and natural terrain variations. In '99-'00 the Zephyr Mountain Lodge was completed offering the first ski-in, ski-out condominium lodging at the resort. Most of the attractions around Winter Park are snow based. Redfeather Snowshoe Tours leave twice daily for a guided two hour trek, whilst scenic Snowcat Tours leave three times daily for two hour excursions.
Dog sledding is offered by Mountain Dawg and there are two ice skating rinks open to the public, one covered in Cooper Creek Square in Winter Park, the just outside the town on Fraser. Various sleigh ride options are available and there's a tubing hill, floodlit with a rope tow, nearby. 40 minutes from the slopes there is the Hot Sulphur Springs Resort where water flows from the rocks into several pools with a temperature range from 80 to 112 degrees.
For movie buffs, The Silver Screen Cinema shows all the latest Hollywood releases. Winter Park increasingly promotes itself as an attraction alongside the City of Denver which is a realistic day trip from the resort or, for destination travellers, is good for a one or two night stop over at either end of your Winter Park vacation, especially to acclimatise as you're already about a mile above sea level.
Denver has been revitalised over the past decade and has a thriving urban centre, with the redeveloped Lower Downtown area especially attractive with its restaurants, brew pubs, galleries and boutiques in restored historic buildings. The long 16th Street Mall is the key shopping area whilst the City Park houses an excellent Natural History Museum as well as the Denver Zoo, Gates Planetarium and an IMAX cinema. There are several other major museums as well as national basketball, ice hockey and basketball stadiums, plus Mile High stadium, home to the Superbowl Champions - the Denver Broncos.
