Everyone visiting should cross the car park to the legendary Sven Hornell's photograph exhibition and shop in a pleasant, spacious adjacent building. Sven arrived on his national service in the late 1930s and returned soon afterwards to end up staying for the rest of his life. He spent more than 50 years photographing all aspects of the area including the changing natural landscape, flora and fauna; the Sami tribal traditions; events in World War 2 and of course the various changes in the local ski industry over the years. Since his death in 1992, the centre has been run by Sven's family and admission is free. There are regular slide shows of his work there. (www.sven-hornell.se)
If you have a day free a train trip back South East to Kiruna - a two hour journey - is a possibility. The city has several points of interest including the vast mine, it's own ski hill and Sweden's space institute, which is open to visitors. You could also take a taxi from the station to the world famous ice hotel at nearby Jukasjarvi. This remarkable structure is rebuilt on the banks of the Torne river each winter and has up to 80 beds in dozens of rooms, many filled with spectacular ice sculpture. Anyone is welcome to visit the rooms during the daytime. The hotel closes in late April.
Closer than Kiruna is the coast of Norway at Narvik, only 45 minutes on the train in the other direction. Here you will see spectacular scenery of the fjords and there are several visitor attractions in the town itself including a World War 2 mueum.
