There's a wide range of facilities on offer ranging from tennis, golf, swimming, cycling and horse riding to dog sledding and snow mobiling. Nearby interesting attractions including the Earle A Chiles Centre of the West at the High Desert Museum 6 miles south of Bend. Featuring native flora and period artifacts, the centre's 9 meticulously detailed historic scenes take you back in time to witness the sights and sounds of the past. The rest of the museum covers 20 wooded acres of outdoor trails where you can stroll along a trout stream, watch the museum's otter mascots at play, explore the authentic Settler's Cabin, watch live birds of prey and the hand-feeding of porcupines and browse through exhibits, galleries and a gift shop in the visitors centre.
A little further south is the Newberrry Crater, where more than 500,000 years of volcanic eruptions have formed a surreal landscape where you will feel you are stepping into another world. The 5-mile wide Newberry caldera is now home to rustic fishing resorts at Paulina and East lakes but was once the site of the largest eruptions in America. Take in the spectacular view from 7,985ft Paulina Peak, explore the Lava Cast Forest and visit the Lava River Case, a mile-long tunnel that opens into vast chambers.
Just outside the town of Sisters is the largest llama breeding ranch in the world. Its worth spending a day in Sisters to browse through its many antique shops, galleries, boutiques, gift shops and western wear stores. Smith Rock State Park, located nearby, offers world class rock climbing.
