Les Contamines - Montjoie tends to emphasise the expertise of its locals in certain areas - mostly mountain adventure sports. There are very limited attractions in the resort itself. Bruno Stritmatter, a musher with experience of northern Siberia, leads dog sledding expeditions of one to five days, with longer trips including accommodation and meals. There are snowshoe treks of a shorter duration in to the mountain wilderness, variations include children's adventures and high mountain walks. Sleigh rides and night skiing are another possibility.
For something a little different why not sign up on one of the Mountain Guide Office's cultural tours around the village. He dresses up as a villager from years gone by and relates anecdotes three centuries old. The excursion includes visiting a traditional home where you can taste local food and drink prepared in the time honoured way, including saucisson smoked in the fire place.
The most interesting building in the area is the thirteenth century church of Notre Dame de la Gorge, a neat white chapel with a painted façade. It was described as "An extremely ancient place of pilgrimage with a curious baroque-style oratory, covered with Renaissance frescoes and gilt, in the purest tradition of Savoie's religious heritage..." by Roger Frison Roche writing in Mont Blanc aux sept Vallées. Concerts are sometimes staged in the church. Also in the area there's the remains of an ancient Roman road at the start of the gorge - if you can see it under the snow. The route is used as a cross country trail when snow does cover it.
