SNO-man says
Gulmarg was established for skiing contests by the British in 1927 when they were Colonial rulers of the country. Large meetings were organised up to World War II. Sadly it is currently located in a sometimes dangerous area between Pakistan and India where Western visitors have lost their lives at the hands of local Kashmir rebels, including an infamous decapitation some years ago, but still tourism does thrive here through continuing political uncertainty. The resort and access route is heavily guarded. If it were not for the terrorist threat this is one of the world's meccas for snow lovers, and was growing international business in the late 1980s and early 1990s before the latest flare up of trouble. The area is one of world's best heli-skiing regions, 1000s of possible 2000m plus descents from helicopter, normally dropping skiers on the Apherwat peak, otherwise slopes are generally 200m - 2km in length through beautiful scenery. All ski equipment, including ski suits, can be rented locally. The resort's atmosphere, when in operation under normal circumstances, can generally be identified with 1940s/'50s European skiing. It has a good sunshine, as well as snow record. The resort operates the world's highest golf course at 2680m. Access is via a breathtakingly beautiful route up from Srinagar via Tangmarg.
