SNO-man says
Reintroduced in to international tour operator's brochures in 1997-98 after a long absence due in part to perceived political instability, Gudauri was formerly a luxury destination for the Soviet elite and is now recognised as one of the worlds best (and cheapest) heli-skiing destinations. The mountains offering heliskiing are well over 4000 metres high and skiers can expect to clock up around 10000 metres of vertical mertres on fresh powder fields during a weeks stay. Off-slope facilities are good and the climate favourable, being on the sam latitude as Southern Italy. The main Sporthotel was built by the Austrians in the late 1980s and is now run by a Swiss company who also run the heli-skiing operation.
