There are rather limited shopping opportunities, the best in the boutiques of the larger towns. There are craft shops in most of the villages too though, where local goods and creations may be purchased. The best known local product is a special wooden shoe - tzoque, more commonly called sabots. But carvers also create statuettes of shepherds and animals. In the Gressoney Valley furniture manufacture is the speciality as well as the creation of the local traditional dress. The really ancient art of "puncetto" - a kind of hand made lace featuring a thousand knots in a square centimetre of material - is also practised here. The art has Saracen origins and was introduced to the valley by those locals who took part in the crusades.
