Garmisch - Partenkirchen boasts exceptionally good off-slope facilities. The state-of-the-art Ice Sports Centre contains no less than five ice rinks, three of the in halls, where it's possible to watch or participate in all ice sports - including Scottish or Bavarian curling. Nearby is the Alpspitz - Wellenbad swimming complex with diving pool, leisure pool with wave machine and chute as well as pools for children and families and sauna, solarium and fitness facilities.
Up on the slopes most forms of winter sports are available, including toboggan hire or tandem parascending down from the great heights above. 100km (66 miles) of winter hiking paths are prepared for use. There are many cultural attractions in the vicinity dating from Bavaria's rich and illustrious past, particularly under Ludwig II, who built the fairy tale castles of Linderhof and Neuschwanstein and did a far better job of it than Disney could ever manage.
There are dozens of other historical monuments, monasteries and museums in the vicinity, as well as the opportunity to make excursions to Munich or in to the Austrian Tyrol.
