Full-service ski area located 45 minutes from the facilities of Canmore and close to the Nakiska Ski Centre. The base area complex at Fortress Mountain is situated at an altitude of 2040 m (6,692 ft), the highest in the Alberta Canadian Rockies. This lofty elevation ensures Fortress an annual snowfall 630 cm (21 ft) and a ski season that stretches from early November until late April. Fortress Mountain is thus often the first Alberta Mountain ski area to open for the winter and is the pre-season training site for the Canadian National Freestyle ski team. The casual and relaxed resort offers wide-open cruising as well as serious bumps.

The world class cross-country ski facility at nearby Canmore plays host to numerous competitions, both in summer and winter - the World Cup Mountain Bike Race in July, and the Alberta International Dog Sled Classic in January amongst others. Outdoor activities in Kananaskis Village include sleigh rides, tobogganing, snowshoeing, and ice skating while ice fishing is popular at the many Kananaskis Country ponds and lakes. Snowmobiling in designated areas is a great way to see Kananaskis Country. Visitors can rent or bring their own snowmobile and explore more than 425km of snowmobile trails located in McLean Creeks/Sibbald Flats and Cataract Creeks areas. There are many walking trails , especially in the Bow Valley Provincial Park area, and because of the warm Chinook winds many of the trails and creek beds remain snow free. For those who prefer indoor exercise, the hotels of Kananaskis Village offer numerous swimming pools, jacuzzis, steam rooms and exercise areas.
