South America's biggest ski centre and Argentina's first ski centre with lifts, although the cable car arrived a decade late after the original order made in 1939 from Italy was lost in the Atlantic during World War II. Catedral, sometimes known as Gran Catedral or Cerro Catedral is located 20km (12 miles) from the city of Bariloche. Its 32 lifts include a six seater chair lift recently more than doubled in length up to 2.2km. Snow making has also recently been installed covering much of the terrain. Formerly there were 14 different ski schopols, but now these have all amalgamated in to one, the new Escuela de Esqui Alta Patagonia which has a great range of classes for children aged 3 and up. A slopeside nursery is also available for younger children at the base of the lifts.
