Established in 1964 the Spanish ski resort Baqueira Beret lies at 1500 metres altitude in the Catalonia region of the Spanish Pyrenees. With the highest lifts and ski slopes at 2510m the area is snow sure. Over 549 snow cannons ensure artificial snow making covers 35km of trails, which equates to around 41 of the slopes. The nearest airport transfer to Baqueira Beret is Barcelona at a distance of 340km or approximately 270 minutes driving time. Their season runs from December to April.

SNO-man says

Founded in 1964, Baqueira has grown to become Spain's largest single resort. Its latitude gives an hour more daylight for skiing than in the Alps, and it's warmer too. Well laid out, modern lift infrastructure and a lively and varied après ski scene.

There's a good range of activities in Baqueira. The heli-skiing here is among the cheapest in Europe - amazing when you consider the snow quality and variety of terrain. Dog sledding trips are popular and an unusual way to get out and see the countryside, or if you prefer to take a slower pace there are snowshoeing trips. For indoor pursuits there is a huge sports centre featuring ice rink, heated pool, gym, saunas, solarium, massage and shop in nearby Vielha (15km/9 miles away by public bus).

"Baqueira Beret" by any other name

The Spanish resort is also known as Baqueira Beret and has common misspellings:

The direction which the various Baqueira Beret slopes face can make or break your ski holiday. To guarantee good snow conditions, choose a resort with piste which face the right way for the time of year you're travelling.

- In the coldest winter months of January and February pick a resort with sunny south facing slopes, so your days on the snow doesn't feel like a polar expedition. Conversely, in the warmest spring skiing months of March and especially April, a resort with cool and shady north facing trails will ensure you're not riding on slush, but benefitting from best late season snow. The best destinations have areas which face in all directions so that you're guaranteed greating conditions whatever the weather. Baqueira Beret has slopes facing N NW.
