World-class sporting facilities include indoor and outdoor riding stables, 28 indoor thermal swimming pools, 18 tennis courts (two indoor), shooting range, an ice rink and an 18 hole golf course. About 34km of walkways are kept clear for hikers in the winter.
Places of historical interest include the early pilgrimage church of Maria zum Guten Rat completed in 1767 and the Gastein Museum and mining monument "Alt B"ckstein".
Taking advantage of the thermal curative treatments should not be missed, the highlight for most being the 2km train ride to the Healing Galleries where temperatures reach around 90 degrees celcius.
Excursions to Salzburg are a possibility.
