Axamer Lizum Resort

Axamer Lizum is a snow-sure ski resort located south-west of Innsbruck. Boasting a top altitude of 2340m, it’s the highest resort in the area and one of the highest in Austria. Surrounded by attractive forestry, this scenic village is fairly small, quiet and mostly traffic free with traditional Austrian architecture. The resort is conveniently positioned 25km from Innsbruck and is a short transfer from the nearest airport. It was purpose built for the Olympic Games in 1964 (and hosted the Winter Olympics again in 1976) and the quality of the pistes reflects this - the skiing here is considered world class and skiers will find themselves gliding down the slopes in the tracks of former world champions.

One of the attractions of this resort is that it’s snow sure all season with natural powdery snow. It offers some fast, challenging and exciting terrain with some VERY difficult slopes at the top of the mountain and the well-groomed pistes have made it a haven for keen skiers for the last 50 years.

10 ski lifts here are able to transport 1,200 people an hour. There’s a good free ski bus that takes skiers from the village to the mountain lifts and you can also take the bus to Innsbruck to explore the town. As the ski area is quite small, you might want to consider purchasing a Glacier Lift Pass which gives you access to Nordpark, Patscherkofel, Kühtai, Rangger Köpfl, Glungezer, Schlick 2000, and Stubai Glacier - these offer excellent terrain and even glacier skiing.

Since the Winter Olympics, Axamer Lizum remains based around winter sport. As well as skiing, you can try tobogganing, ice skating, ice curling and snow shoeing. The village has a swimming pool and bowling alley as well as a supermarket and occasional markets.

Skiing/BoardingSkiing in Axamer Lizum

Whilst it’s primarily a haven for intermediate and advanced skiers, Axamer Lizum also accommodates well for beginners with brilliant ski schools and some good quality nursery slopes at the base of the mountain. The beginner’s slopes are considered fairly challenging for those completely new to the sport, but being thrown into the deep end is an excellent way to learn and once you’ve learned to ski here, you’re likely to find other resorts a doddle.

The ski area is first-rate for intermediate and advanced skiers with a range of varied terrain and original Olympic routes. For those wanting to put their speed to the test, there’s a speed measurement course where you can find out how fast you travel. This is great place to compete with friends or simply try and beat your own personal record. If you’re feeling extra confident there is a public ski race...

If completive skiing isn’t really to your taste and you’d rather ski the slopes unchecked there’s a good amount of terrain. Birgitzkoepfl is a demanding slope for the advanced skier and the highly recommended Women’s Olympic slope and Pleisen are some of the fastest pistes in the area! The resort has brilliant connections to other ski areas and skiers can easily travel further afield to find glaciers and other skiing delights – ask for a Glacier lift pass.

This is a great destination for snowboarders – don’t be surprised to see Max Plotzeneder and the likes here - and has excellent freestyle and freeriding terrain to top it off. Popular with ‘boarders and freestyle skiers who want to practise some tricks, there’s a terrain park with a half-pipe as well as jumps and naturally formed gullies. You’ll also find a good amount of off-piste, especially when there’s been fresh snow.

Axamer Lizum Apres Ski

The après ski here is suited to those who, after a long day on the slopes, want to relax with good friends, appetizing food and delicious drinks. There are six pubs in the area and two nightclubs a short bus ride away. Axamer Lizum’s close proximity to Innsbruck means that party lovers have easy access to a more lively night out - this is a fantastic way to end the holiday and enjoy the great après ski Austria has to offer!

There are a number of ski huts where you can relax with a drink and enjoy some live music after a day on the slopes. Lizumstubn is a lively hangout and one of the most popular après ski venues around. It’s perfect for a daytime pint or you can head there in the evening for a social night out! If you fancy something that reflects traditional Austria, Stamperl has a good range of drinks for a quieter evening with a rustic feel.

Foodies are blessed with an excellent range of restaurants and eateries here - you’ll find a wide range of choice from casual restaurants for quick lunches to fine dining establishments for a nice night out. Pleisenbutte is near the base of Pleisen station and satisfies hungry stomachs with authentic, home cooked food in a rustic mountain hut. A delicious restaurant that’s perfect for a special night out is Panoramo Resturant Hodal Haul, located at 2,340m on the Olypiabahn, with beautiful breath-taking views and gourmet delights.

There are loads of ways to enjoy your holiday that don’t involve food or drink (or even skiing). Tobogganing is fun for all ages and there’s an indoor swimming pool with slides that kids will love. Holidaymakers can enjoy a number of other non-ski activities such as bowling, ice curling and romantic torch-lit walks.

Götzens is a lovely, beautiful little village. I love it! The skiing facilities were very good. I would recommend getting the Olympic pass, or upgrading while you are here, and then taking the bus to the Stubai glacier for at least one day. It was a very different experience skiing over there than the local ar... + more

Axamer Lizum is like a plateau with mountains behind it, the hotels are high up on the plateau and the ski area is the next bit up while Innsbruck is down in the valley. There was hardly anyone on the slopes and for easy skiing, the area is lovely. We wanted to try the glacier one day but it was absolutely free... + more

Axamer Lizum is a small Austrian town/village, not really a ski resort in itself. It has good links to 2 ski resorts by bus. It’s good for people who are on a budget and don’t mind putting the effort in to get to the ski resort in the morning. If you aren’t interested in après ski then it’s fine. There are... + more

Families in Axamer Lizum

Axamer Lizum is particularly suited to families with older children who are already established skiers as there is a limited amount of easy beginner runs and lots of challenging intermediate terrain. Complete beginners won’t be lost though – under the watch of excellent ski schools and instructors, quick learners will be out on the more difficult slopes in no time.

There are some great non-ski activities where all the family can enjoy quality time tobogganing and ice skating, swimming pool or bowling. The resort has a “Kids Land” with a play area which children will love. Most of the restaurants here cater excellently for children and for a great kid’s choice, visit the Magic Mountain restaurant which has an extensive kids menu.

Hotels in the area are child friendly – small families can look at triple rooms and if you’re travelling with a baby or toddler you can request room with a crib. Some of our hotels offer childcare and children’s facilities – browse below or give us a call to find out more.

GroupsGroup Holidays Axamer Lizum

Axamer Lizum caters well for mixed ability groups of skiers and non skiers. Ideal for keen beginners and confident skiers, the ski area offers a good amount of varied terrain including some great off piste. Non-ski activities here are good, with bowling, ice skating and tobogganing amongst the range of available activities. If you’re travelling with non-skiers, book a hotel with wellness facilities so they can spend the day relaxing while everyone else is hitting the slopes.
