The location of the snow home we were allocated was perfect as it was right around the corner from the chair lift, which meant I could get off the lift, drop my board off and go straight out in the evenings. I was surprised how good the accommodation was for the money we paid! I would definitely recommend it. We had a good sized room which was well heated – it didn’t have a TV but that wasn’t a problem for us. The snow homes are little out of town, about 30 minutes and they’re served by a snow bus so you don’t have to walk. Inside is very basic and not very flash, very clean and quite dated but we weren’t expecting anything flash so this wasn’t a problem. Our small, homely and traditional ‘Snow Houses’ offer comfortable accommodation for those who enjoy the flexibilty, value and variety of bed and breakfast. A half board option is also available.

  • Twins* and singles have bath or shower
  • A maximum of 3 twins can be guaranteed in the same Snow House
  • Single rooms cannot be guaranteed to be in the same house as twins

"Amazing location, but remember its a lottery"

The location of the snow home we were allocated was perfect as it was right around the corner from the chair lift, which meant I could get off the lift, drop my board off and go straight out in the evenings. Some of the homes are stuck out of the main resort – I got chatting to 2 people on the slopes who were staying in Snow Houses further out in a little village, where you had to use the commuter bus to get out. I think you’re allocated where you stay on arrival, but if you could pick one I’d definitely go back to the one I stayed in. The host was nice and friendly and the breakfasts were really good – your normal cheeses, pates, tomatoes, boiled eggs, bread and jam etc. I like to eat out and go out and about in the evenings so the B&B basis worked perfectly for me. I go by myself and the rooms I stay in are always super small, literally a bed and a gangway. My one here had an en-suite and everything was nice and clean which is the main thing.

It was in a fairly big building (which was part of a farm), with the family living on the bottom floor (we only saw a little of them but they were great). Breakfast was served between 7 and 9 and they did a good spread with meat, cheese, bread and a hot egg if you wanted it; as good as it gets for continental breakfasts. The only thing was that it was a little walk to the skiing (about 5 minutes) from where we were although it wasn’t much of a problem. We’d happily stay in the same house again.

The snow homes were great. I’d stayed in this type of accommodation before so knew what to expect. Ours was a bit out of the village on the other side of the rail station, but it was actually quite convenient for the rail station. We were still within walking distance of the town and it probably took us about ten minutes to walk there in ski boots, which wasn’t a problem. Our bedroom was fine, it had plenty of storage space and the cleanliness was superb. We also had a separate ski room downstairs with a rack for boots. There was plenty to eat at breakfast, typical Austrian fare but lots of it.

The lady was so nice and deserves a mention. At the end we had a ridiculously early transfer time so everyone had to get up in the early hours… She made everyone a lovely lunch. Then when some other guests overslept she woke them up and personally drove them to the transfer place. I was initially worried as I tend to stay in smaller villages on the outskirts when I visit Mayrhofen (because the Penken queue is usually choka). However they have a new Penken gondola now which was just 2 minutes away down the footpath. Overall the Snow Houses are easy and cheap, I don’t have to pay a supplement so they’re really good for me when I go on my own.

It’s a B&B and we had an Austrian breakfast every morning (cheeses, meats and nutella). The lady in charge spoke barely any English but we got by smiling and nodding. It was just me and my mate staying here and for the 2 of us it was fine because we didn’t have any children to entertain or anything. The snow homes would definitely be good for groups of lads who want a week with more emphasis on the slopes and just somewhere to crash at night.
